Try before you buy - Cyborg RAT7

Why did I buy the RAT7? Because I'm a sucker, especially for white, these days. Yay, now that's out of the way, let's move on.

I wish there was some way to test these sorts of devices before buying them... Thought it might just be the fact It's a new mouse after a year of using something else (I remember it took a few weeks to get used to my old now-long-dead G9 after switching from a G500), the design of the RAT7 is rather different than my previous mouse, and I think it has a small problem...

If you take a look at these two images, you can see that my old mouse, a $5 Dell piece of junk, was a little more substantial in the bodywork department, especially where the right-hand side of the palmgrip meets the desk or mousepad or what have you.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Moving from the Dell to the Cyborg leaves the palm of my hand opposite my thumb feeling very incredibly out of place hanging in space over the edge of the palmrest, and it makes me feel like I'm suddenly going to apply too much pressure on the palm end and either slide right off the mouse or suddenly do a wheelie or something...

Does anyone know how I might deal with this? It's very disconcerting. I'm thinking of jury-rigging a small extension to it to help support my palm. Yes I know the palmrest can be adjusted, but that only makes the mouse longer, not deeper.

Also, one other question: The advertising bumpf makes a big deal of it having 6 programmable buttons with 3 profiles, allowing for 18 macros. Am I right in thinking these six buttons are the Forward, Back, Sniping DPI, Mouse 3, and DPI adjust up and down buttons? I can't see or find any others. :/

It's funny, I see a lot of bad reviews for this mouse and all of my buddies hate it but I love it. I think I may have odd shaped hands but I just extend all the pieces out as far as they go and its perfect. I also finger tip my mouse so that helps I guess. I also have the giant pinky rest on it that I use to support the right two fingers. One benefit I can think for you is that no one would ever steal it at a lan...

As for the extra button, you can click on the cyborg face right next to your index finger you can change profiles on the fly. I don't game as much as I would like but I did find my productivity did go way up switching to a gaming mouse.

See this is why I'm a moron; I didn't go through the whole package before starting to use it. I didn't even notice it came with a little box of alternate grips. I got the pinkie rest out. It's a little odd, but I like it. The only thing is I think I would have liked it a little more if it were a flat rest, like the thumb rest, rather than this odd wave-shaped thing. I guess I just have big hands.

As for it being unattractive... Those people are weird. I love it. It's zany and wacky and odd and so cool. I've had my eye on the RAT ever since I first saw it in Maximum PC something like two years ago.

Gaming is not about being quiet and restrained and modest. Look at the cases we use. Sure some of them are minimal, but things like the HAF X (although that's pretty ugly) reflect what I think peripheral design CAN be about; going mad. It's like Lamborghini. The whole point is to be garish and silly and appeal to that childlike designing sense which demands a gun or rocket to be strapped to every surface. And I think the RAT fits that aesthetic to a tee.

haha nice, we all have our moments

One thing I would like to change is have the metal support under the palm rest move in and out with the rest.

Totally this. I think I'm actually going to jury rig and extension for mine... the fact that the frame ends an inch and a half short of where the palm grip does when extended means that when I rest my hand on it, the end of the frame just becomes the pivot point as the weight of my hand makes the mouse do a wheelie.

But other than that I think I like it... I just have to get used to holding it differently than my old mouse.

Definitely takes some getting used to but once I did, I enjoy it.
