Headphones for someone who breaths music

Thread Starter
My good friend is moving to Chicago in 1 months time. Seeing as he owns no headphones, or even small speakers, I would like to buy him a set of cans. Here is a list of bands he listens to: LCD Soundsystem, Animal collective, Bloc Party, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, And you will know us by the trail of the dead, Deer Hunter, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Broken Social Scene, Bruce Springsteen, Interpol, at the drive in, etc...

Maybe that was a lame idea. He listens to a very broad and large amount of music to say the least. Has a 900 album+ (all in vinyl) collection.

I was thinking grado sr 325Is', audio technica ath700's, or maybe senheiser hd5xx's. Something along those lines at least. Denon offers a few in that 200-300 range that I have not had the luxury of hearing. Im also aware that beyer dt880 are fantastic, but i feel they are out of the price range im looking at. Any advice?

EDIT: Crap forgot to mention that these will be ampless. There is no room in his dorm for an amp, and he will be walking/bussing daily with these (when/if possible)

If he's going to be walking/bussing with these, he won't want a pair of open-back headphones. One of the most recommended pairs of closed-back cans is the ATH-M50. I'd check those ones out.
