Traveling with my Graphics card

Thread Starter
I am going to arizona to visit my family on saturday for 3 weeks and I can not bring my PC. My parents computer is not especially great but it is custom built so I was wondering if I can just bring my Radeon HD 7950
with me and use it with steam games? Will the cpu be a huge bottleneck?

Also how delicate are they? Will it be ok if I pack it in my suitcase to go on the plane?

what processor?

also, pack it in the original GPU box if you have it (with the antistatic bag and such), and then pad it out best you can.

I will look but if I do have the box I really don't think I still have the antistatic bag anymore. Any other alternatives?
And I am not sure what it is but it was never great to begin with and probably 4-5 years old

With the extremely limited info of a not that great PC from 4-5 years the CPU will be a huge bottleneck and the psu might not handle, that doesn't even take into account the pcie slot is 1.0 most likely with an unknown actual speed so a 8x pci e 1.0 would be painful to that poor 7950.

I at least know the psu is fine lol... but if it was 1.0 and 8x would it still be better than on board graphics..

I worry about degradation over time with just general usage not that it had a psu.

It would undoubtedly be better but idk if I would trust my gpu on a psu that old unless the one thing you overspent for in that rig was the psu.

4-5 years...custom built... im thinking C2D E series or Athlon x2 series.

Will be a horrendous bottleneck but better than the the onboard. Hope the PSU can handle it

Yep. Likely a Core 2 Duo machine or Athlon64 potentially Phenom based system. Regardless there will be a bottleneck but it will be much better than on-board. Have you considered the horrible PSU it could wield?
