[Thesecretworld] The Secret World Subscription Changes - FAQ

Thread Starter
Funcom's MMO has changed their business model in light of the game doing poorly and dropping down to under 60K subscribers. they are dropping the subscription and any of the initial 200K purchasers can play it for free from now on(and pay for "memberships" which give you EXP and other perks). Future customers now just have to buy the box like Guild Wars 2. Lifetime subscription buyers got the shaft, but for those that want to check it out this is good since the game is on sale cheap.

What is now required to be able to play The Secret World?
Everyone who has purchased (or will purchase) the game can now enjoy the full game without being required to sign-up for a monthly fee. This means that all of the heralded story-line and all of the game content available right now can be played as you please without requiring any additional payment.

also, no official article yet but it seems that the results of Funcom's merger/acquisition inquiry are in and EA has put in the winning bid. yep, EA will now swallow up another studio.

Wow on Oct 2, Funcom stated: "No it's not going free-to-play any time soon, There's currently no plans for making it free-to-play." When money is concerned things change quick.

I might have to give this game a try now.

Cool now I can play again. Glad that all the content is available in F2P. I really hope this move brings more players, it's a really good game, it just needs some time to grow.

I really wanted to play this game, I just felt it didn't deserve my money.

I'm definitely going to give it a go now.

without exception, every single company who has said their game isn't going F2P "any time soon" have gone F2P within 4 months of saying that.

I gave up on Secret World beta VERY early. Here's the story *wavy flashback transition*

There I was, at the character selection screen. I was putting together my slightly modifiable player, going through the options, when the game crashed. I sent a bug report like a good beta tester, relaunched the game. Since I had already seen some of the customization options, I sifted through a bit quicker and had my character about 3/4 modified, the client crashed. I sent a bug report, and relaunched. I chose NO customization options at all, typed my character's name, clicked to play, and the game crashed. I sent a bug report and uninstalled.

*shrug* oh well tongue.gif

I tell you what though if they go for the GW model then thats great and could be a proper challenger for GW2 (Yeah sure it wont be as popular overall)

I really enjoyed the trial i played the start of last month, And ill definitely buy the game for this now.

I was gonna buy a lifetime sub but instead i brought a 3DS XL :3 good choice rite?

How anyone still buys into Funcom or Cryptic games is beyond me, especially "lifetime" subscriptions.

If it's an MMO made by one of these two companies, I'm not touching it.

Long time follower of the game dev, took part in a lot of the ARG events pre launch. The game is good, and is what drives the game. The quest system is quirky, but I liked it. You didn't have the main hub where you picked up 10 quest, go out to the zone and then return. The quests took you around the zones, and you really felt like you were exploring the game. The investigative quest lines are what I really enjoyed about the game. You were given clues about where the next step was, but you were never explicitly told where to go or what to do. One section required you to die to proceed, another had players translating Morse code, and another required knowledge of classical composers.

Combat was good, but it just felt off. It is suppose to be an active style like GW2, but it just isn't as smooth. Animations felt clunky, the jumping animation was horrendous, and to me the flow just didn't feel right. Combat abilities and the idea behind it was great. The conditions applied to self and enemies gave a lot for experimentation and optimization within groups. Many skill either applied one of 4 conditions or had a bonus affect when a specific condition was applied. So optimizing a dungeon group of 5 would allow for a lot of theory crafting to optimize damage and skill rotations.

I'm not a huge fan of MMOs in the first place, I've had 2 runs at WoW, 3 and 6 months which was mainly to stay connected with friends who had moved, and still play GW2 from time to time. I knew from the start that the game wouldn't be huge, but I wanted to see this game succeed. For it to fit into a niche like EVE. I'm sad to see it start to dwindle so quickly. In the end, the game at its core is great, but the way your character look, moved, and responded to inputs didn't feel right. When most of the time you spend in a game involves watching a model that doesn't feel right, combined with solo play in a world where community makes things so much better I just let it drift off into its own realm.
