Asrock FM2A75M-ITX Motherboard Fire - Page 15

Another one up in flames

Had been running great for three months until today. Turned it on and it popped straight away. I had to blow the flame out.

Shame on you ASrock mad.gif

I've been using the A10 5700 and everything was set at defaults.

wow, this is crazy ...

When playing games, the heatsink gets to about 55-60c maximum (I can hold my finger on it indefinitely, and feels warm - barely)
It definitely has worked out great. Problem is, now I can't play games for a couple days - my wrist hurts so bad from making 9 cuts / 4000 strokes with a hacksaw and an hour with various grits of sandpaper on a dense alumininum alloy heatsink from an old 95W Pentium 4 processor.

CPU voltage : 1.156v @ 3.4Ghz
Memory Voltage : 1.5v (from 1.580v)
Thermal throttle disabled
Cool'n'Quiet disabled
Turbo Core disabled

Problem solved !
=)

ASRock, if you ever get around to reading this - HEATSINK YOUR VRMS thumb.gif

Edit : All 8 IC's are covered by this heatsink. There is a corner cut out for one of the R36 chips to be covered by a seperate heatsink, which was a made from the same heatsink material. It cools independantly of the large piece.

Did you measured tems without the little fan on the heatsink? Maybe the air coming out from the cpu fan will do the job, without the extra fan.
BTW nice job

^This.

I'd set the fan to 'pull' instead of 'push'. You'll get better VRM temperatures and better CPU temperatures I bet thumb.gif

Very neat ghettomod you have going on there smile.gif

j_manou : I did, CPU fan not pushing enough air to keep it cool enough .. so after 10 or so minutes, the heatsink would be around 100celcius .. which wasn't good for the thermal adhesive.

Artik : I think i will give that a try ... I think your right about what you mentioned. I'll let you know tonight.
Okay so after more testing, the cpu was getting hotter than the vrm (hitting the tcase), so I flipped that fan around - and added a silent 1200rpm 120mm fan on the top portion of the case. Now, vrm heatsink I put in gets about 50, cpu 58. AXTU threshold set lvl 5 when below 60c, and so far so good (fan does not climb to level 6 - 10.). Post some shots tommorow.

So, reversing the fan did improve temps or worsened them?

Artik : Improved them, drastically.

CPU never goes above 58c @ level 5 cooling fan speed now, in various tests (Aida64, prime95, etc..) The setting is Level 5 / Threshold is 60c. Played planetside 2 last night for about 5 hours, periodically checking the tempurature every 30 minutes or so. It never got to 60c.

.....It was hitting 69-70c with level 10 (ramping from level 5 to 10 @ 60c) before I flipped that fan around, but that was after about 2 hours of gaming. The entire case would warm up to just under this, so all components were running at 55-60c roughly - in effect, that seemed to turn the entire PC into one gigatic heatsink, albeit an inefficient one. That would have been enough, but I prefer to have as perfect stability as possible. I didn't see the temps get up to 72c, which is when the processor will auto-downclock itself. So, in effect - it was barely stable this way. I never noticed any performance loss during the 2 hours i was gaming with it.

I did add another 120mm fan though at the same time I flipped that fan around, so that also adds in here to the drastic improvement. My case and all components stay a nice cool tempurature now (about 25-30c).

Despite having 5 fans actively cooling (not including the PS fan, which never turns on because the system never seems to want to draw more than 150w under load), it is surprisingly quiet. Around 18-20db, and if it ramps up to level 10 for the cpu fan, it's around 22-25db.

Mission Succesful !
