Asrock FM2A75M-ITX Motherboard Fire - Page 17

I put the those heatsinks but the smaller ones on my mofsets, they still over heat. Yours will be too bit to fix on them. You need the 2x2 not the 3x3 ones. I wasnt actively cooling them from up close, only from a case fan at the top of the case ( prodigy) i gave up trying to not make it overheat anymore. Its a media pc in the living room now.

I'm not looking to over-clock the processor or anything so hopefully that won't over heat everything too much. I'm thinking of sticking a 12cm fan on the case to throw cool air over the motherboard with an 60mm put in the case somewhere to blow directly over the heat-sinks put on the vcm's.

As for the heat sinks being too large I can always hack them down to size then use the remnants to cool other things.

12cm fan here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Turbine-120-Silent/dp/B004KG9SBC/ref=sr_1_27?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366258159&sr=1-27&keywords=cooling+fan+silent

6cm fan here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-60x10mm-Replacement-Computer-Connector/dp/B00006HOMA/ref=sr_1_78?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366258422&sr=1-78&keywords=cooling+fan+60

Would that stop it from setting itself on fire?

I think youd need to stick the fans very close to the heatsinks on the vrms for them to be any use. Because of their relatively small size they heat up very fast. It wouldnt catch fire but it would throttle. Then the fps would become unbearable. Solution would be to run it in non crossfire. That way the vrm that overheats( the intergrated gpu one) wouldnt get hot. You wont get much performance out of your 6670 though.

Would it be worth carving up a larger heatsink into thinner pieces to make this work? Rather than little ones that can't hold or lose much heat.

Perhaps something like this cut into strips?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Copper-Metal-Heatsink-Diffusion-Cooling/dp/B005435R88/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366262368&sr=8-1&keywords=heatsink+red+copper

Screw it, i'll just make one at the metal shop. thinking about 5.3cmx6cmx0.4xm should be a big enough profile to cool simply, now how to get the airflow, perforate it perhaps?

Right! seven hours of work in the shop later and i've got some really good work done on this heat-sink.

The main body of it is a rod of copper about 20mm in diameter bent into a U shape. I'm going to mill out a contact area tomorrow to cover the components. I've also got about more or less three meters of copper sheet that's about 1.5cm wide and 0.8mm thick and i've come up with a method of corrugating the stuff. Tomorrow we solder the sink and the fin's together and then finish construction! I'll upload a pic once it's done.

Little bit of a bump.

Is this issue solely on the ITX variant?

I ask because I was looking at picking this one up:

Seems so. No other reported cases of fire except for this board.
