What MOSFET are you pointing at?

Mind testing temperature on the topmost one, and on the lowermost one? Thanks biggrin.gif

It was the one on the left i think, was my friend pointing and i was playing. The right hand one tends to be cooler for some reason.

I also have 5 fans in the case, 2 on my water cooler, one in the back and 2 in the front.

Hmm .. I was only able to locate two mosfet drivers on this board, and they are located on the bottom. Did they just use another MOSFET, in place of a third IC driver ?
that could explain part of why this is issue is occuring only with specific VRM's (we've all seen the images of the burnt out boards....) .. doesn't really explain how throttling ties in with that though.

I guess I just do'nt really understand enough about how this works.

Still waiting for my board to come back. RMA'd Jan 6', I imagine the earliest would be about February or so .. ?

That's the IGP mosfet then.

@Mildaine: It's just an underpowered design. The leftmost MOSFETs are responsible for taking care of the IGP/NB power delivery, and what ASRock failed to realize is that said section of the package makes up for almost half of the power consumed by the unit.

That's why they are burning.

Artik : I had my unit paired with an AMD A10-5700 (65w TDP). It's just awful to think that even the cheapest FM2 mobo on the market could cause this to happen from such a low power processor .. and to make matters worse, this mobo was $110 (with tax), which is definately not the cheapest. It also makes me wonder if AMD is being anywhere accurate with their claimed TDP ratings .. maybe that's part of the issue here too.

I think i'll take a look at some of the power consumption tests for the FM2's, see what I can learn.

J_manou : Don't spend ANY time in BIOS if you do'nt have to ! thumb.gif

Ok. The motherboard came with bios 1.90 intstalled by Asrock Europe. The first think that i did was to heatsink the VRM's. Then i entered bios to disable turbo. I noticed that the VCore with turbo on was hovering between 1.250 and 1.275 (previous board was jumping to 1.5 plus from time to time). Just in case i disabled turbo, lowered Vcore to 1.156 and enabled C&Q. With the case open and during windows installation, the VRM's was relatively warm. Temperature of cpu was idling 36 and watching 1080p MKV was 45. I will be watching it and report.

My current Gigabyte F2A75M-HD2 gets barely warm with an A10-5700 with its NB pushed to 1.8GHz, running DDR3-2100, and the GPU core at 851MHz.

Turbo disabled and CPU undervolted to 1.12V though. LLC still makes it reach 1.2V.

Okay, thanks for info guys. Now, I have a question...

I know there is a chance that I won't get a new board back, or ASRock decides to refuse replacement or whatever. If that happens, do they send me the old board back ?
And if they do send it back as is, is there some possibility of replacing the VRM / MOSFET chips with a soldering iron? It looks like those chips are fairly generic / non-proprietary .. could they be replaced by the same / similar spec chips ? or is that impossible ?
