i use the plex client for my pcs at home and on my phone. but when i log into my plex there should be an option for Plex/Web and that will allow you to view your movies in the browser

once you publish your server to the web log into myplex and select your server then you should see the option

It can be hard to find a "one-size-fits-all" solution for media streaming. Personally, I use Plex, SubSonic, and Serviio...all installed on a beefy VM, that will always fit my needs one way or another. Plex is great, but it does require the plex app. SubSonic is great (primarily for music), but can play videos using flash. The transcoding options of SubSonic are simply fantastic. On devices without flash, SubSonic isn't so hot...but some of the community have created an HTML 5 web app for SubSonic, that will hopefully support video playback in the future.

Serviio is like my catch all solution, providing DLNA services...if needed.

Plex doesn't have to use the Plex client, it can handle DLNA requests as well. I've had better luck streaming content to my cell phone using Skifta rather than the Plex app.

Man, glad I ran into this post. I currently been pulling my hair out trying to get the Fios router to run as secondary while my personal gigabit router runs primary. Didn't think of just taking the easy route and turning it into a switch. thumb.gif

To stay on topic Plex is great. My only gripes with it is that it doesn't support playing rar'd files. winksmiley.jpg

Yes, I am aware it can do DLNA...but on one of my TVs I have a very basic Sony DLNA box. It's like Plex transcodes to that with a horribly low quality, that I just can't stand to watch.

yeah I have come to relise I may need more than one media server basicly I want to watch movies anywhere -Plex does this ok but i also want some of my files accessable from anywhere -plex does not do this.

I still have a lot of reaserch to do as i am new to servers. I support them to certen extent at work but thats very different from trying to have on at home?

can anyone recomend a website or post on OCN where I can learn a bit about it so i can get everything set up I have access to server os's and the like just need some direction and know of the limitations I gues.
