Dream E-Peen Machine

I have, once again, redone my rig list. this time to allow myself more room for cooling, be it multiple closed loop mods or a full custom loop in the future. This will be used as my everyday pc, HTPC, high end gaming rig, VM, rendering system and possibly as a benching system, though that is still on the table as are a few other use options. I will be upgrading to a 1440p monitor soon, so I will be using dual cooling modded GPU's, of which i have yet to decide on. I am deciding on a couple Hydro 680's and a full custom loop or multiple closed loops and some simple mods to cool the GPU's. If you have any opinions on that, please feel free to discuss them with me.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions feel free to express them.

My dream nerd machine would be a 4xGTX690 because two of them are completely useless.

1. Given that, why would you spend 1k$ on a CPU that you will end watching porn with.
I hope you have a very good reason beside you want a bigger e-peen to spend that kind of money for something that will be replaced in 1, max 2 years.

2. H100 cooling a 3970x? lachen.gif

Oh yes, I hope you caught the meaning of the first sentence. If not, only God can help you. You better hope he exists laugher.gif

The H100i will be temp until I can get a full loop in there sometime soon after getting the rest of the rig together. As for your first question, I don't know the requirements of rendering or anything like that gets I am still learning. So I figure I'll put the highest and work my way down until I get something I am happy with and still meets all my needs and wants. Would you suggest I go down to a 3930K like in my Sig rig? Which is my fall back project if this doesn't work out.

Do you realize you don't need a 3970X nor a 3930K for the following reasons:
"I would be using it as an HTPC, my everyday web surfing system, high end gaming, VM, as well as to start learning and dabbling in things like CryEngine 3."

Why do you need another computer?
You have a good rig, if you really want to upgrade wait at least the next generation. thumb.gif

Oh yes, and a single 7950 with a 3930K? You put most of your budget in something you don't even need for the things you are doing.

Don't waste $ a 3930k will more than fufill all your needs for now. I'd suggest ditching the H100i & get an entry level WC setup like this

You could opt for a 240gb SSD & invest in another 1 TB HDD. As for the gpu you have a great choice in mind so I would say go for it.

Also an 850w psu will be enough for your build....

Thanks God, wow, I love you lachen.gif

My 7970 is enough to max nearly every games at 1200p. Almost all games are console port nowadays.
If you are mostly planning to game, get a 2500k/2600k. I got my 2600k for 150$ new. I can overclock it to 5GHz, it won't be limiting me until a good and long time. Invest your hard earned money in GPU(s) instead of flushing it into an expensive CPU.
Don't spend your money all at once into computer. Tech change so fast, in 1 year you will want to change it. Something you could do with a cheaper computer that will do fine until you really want/have to get a new one.

I bought an i5-750 with a cheap Asus board. I spent 350$ in total.
I then bought an i7-870 and a high-end board for 350$ as I sold my i5 & board for 300$. I did a mistake, but I didn't waste too much.

Recently I sold my i7-870 and my board for 330$ and I bought for 330$ my 2600k & UD3H board.

Did I win this time? Hell yea. The i7-870 was more than enough for what I needed to do. The 2600k is simply overkill.

Unless you want to use exotic display 1440p+, IMO getting a second card is really not needed. I am personally waiting single graphic card to be able to max games at 1440p with steady 60FPS.
I paid my 7970 300$ and it is stupidly fast. Nearly 3 times the performance of my 5870 and I was playing new games with my 5870...

Changed the OP, went with something a little more modest. Still overkill but I like it. haha i just don't know if i should red mod the 7970 or leave it alone?
Asus is really not recommended at the moment. Very bad customer support lately. Gigabyte 7970s have very good heatsink but beware of voltage locked models.
No need of aftermarket cooler IMO, grab a good model in the first place.

If you are ready to put that kind of money, you might want to hold a little for the 8000 series though. I suspect AMD will release it in January but that's just me, you risk waiting a good 2 months until release. Plus, the new series might *cough* will be overpriced. If I had to put 400$ in a 7970 I would wait /that's just me.

The 3930k is still overkill for that build. Do yourself a favor and get with a 2600k or 2700k a watercooling system if you really want something exotic. You will be able to push 5+GHz with only watercooling.
2600k is 5GHz guaranteed while few 3930k/3960x are able to do that.

Dawg, as I said, don't spend all your money in your computer all at once. With a 2600k and a 7970 there is nothing I can't max at 1200p.

You also failed to mention what your resolution is.

For the RAM, get these:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096
They will overclock easily to 2133MHz with lower latency = better performance than the ram you picked. If you want the best overclock result, don't saturate your memory slot. A single channel for the best result. That will do 8GB which is more than enough.

For the HDD, very good drive biggrin.gif
With a raid array you risk to end with more trouble than benefice. Sure it is twice as fast but you have a SSD that is much much faster.

Nice system you will have thumb.gif

As a side note, ivy bridge is also a nice pick due to PCI-e 3.0 but will not overclock as well as sandy unless you delid it and no video card as for now saturate PCI-e 2.0 x16 lanes.

Anyway good luck with your build. If you are planning to play games, don't go overkill on the CPU. Just don't. Get more GPU juice, this is from that you will get the most performance.

You will thank me later tongue.gif

Like others have said and will say, cut back a bit on the cpu; a 2500k/2600k is the golden cpu right now for gaming and use the money saved on the gpu and a ssd. Quite too often people overspend on a cpu cause they think "because I spent more money it has to be better", this is not always true. Hell, even my amd cpu keeps up with many others' cpus on here when it comes to gaming, but that a can of worms we shall not open.
