I want to go SLI - but VRAM is a concern.

Hellow fellow OCN members thumb.gif, I want to upgrade my sig rig but I need your help deciding where I should go from here...

Here's the deal: I have the opportunity to pick up another 580 next month, however, my current card is the 1.5gb version, so that puts me in a rather difficult situation because as soon as I start adding eye candy to each of the games I play, the chances of running out of vram before I even get to see the improvements are pretty damn high. (I play everything on 1080p btw)

For example, I play BF3 with everything maxed out except MSAA off and shadow quality and mesh quality on medium and I hit 60 fps 99% of the time, and according to gpu-z it uses around 1.2 gb of vram, so it seems a little useless to get another 1.5gb 580 because im obviously going to run out of vram.

What other options do I have? A 680 maybe, but im not sure if it's worth the 30% improvement over the 580.

Alternatively, I could invest the money on some other upgrade but im not sure how much difference would I see in real life gaming.

What do you think??

Thanks a lot!

well you MIGHT struggle in some games at 1.5gb of Vram that's for sure and we can not know what the future will bring.

I am guessing that once you go SLI, you wouldnt upgrade your GPUs again for a year or so and perhaps later down the road you might regret it.

But are you happy with what you have now in current games? If the answer is yes than the 2nd 580 will just things prettier :)

For future games you can cut down some AA and you would be fine.

Also disable Windows Aero before gaming to free up some vram usage.

How much would getting the 2nd 580 cost you btw?

Thanks for replying, it's hard to say really, here in south america hardware is really expensive, however, im doing a trip to France in less than a month and im planning on purchasing it over there on the after-christmas sales which should cut down the prices a little bit probably, so I'd say it should cost me around 300 usd give or take, but im willing to raise my budget to around 500 usd for my next upgrade.

we are in the same boat.

Prices here in Turkey are way too high as well.

Perhaps try selling your 580 in South America and for that money you can purchase a 680 in France?

Once I sold my motherboard in Turkey and for that price I got an even better motherboard from USA :) Could work similar for you who knows. rolleyes.gif

I expect all future DX11 games to use 1.5GB+ as well as the games Jacob mentioned. 2GB is a minimum nowadays if you want to run games on very high settings, even at 1080p.
