Upgrading/Adding Parts to a rig - Have $350 to spend

Thread Starter

Hi all, I have $350 to spend on some PC parts. Yipee! So what do you think I should upgrade/add into my sig rig "Number Cruncher"?

Some things to note:

-I don't want to crossfire

-My 2600k works just fine, thank you very much ;)

-The case is new, don't want to get rid of it

-The Seagate Barracuda's are in RAID 1

-OS is on SSD, files are on Barracuda's. If I ever had an SSD failure I'd just reinstall Windows.

-I have at most 1 SATA 3 port open on my motherboard

Here's what I use the machine for:

-Gaming

-FOLDING (in caps because i run folding for probably 14 hours a day on cpu/gpu)

-Rendering videos

-Daily chores and tasks

So what do you guys recommend? I'm thinking of buying some LED strips to put on the side panel, think that would look kind of nice. :) I'm also thinking of getting a clear side panel (home made, there's a tutorial on this site somewhere for it) so then I can see my beautiful inside of the case, and see the nice LED's. ;)

But yeah, tell me what you think!

Have you overclocked? You could get a better cooling system if you have; perhaps a custom loop.
Also, what is folding?

I'd upgrade your MoBo to something like a ASRock Extreme4, MSI Z77 GD55/65, Gigabyte Z77 UD3H or a Asus P-8Z77 V, and get a nice set of peripherals. What about a cooler? Such as the Noctua NH-D14?

I can check out motherboards, but I was kind of thinking, isn't 2011 the next socket? Then I thought it would be a waste to get an 1155 board when 2011 is the new thing, and probably coming out soon. But I'll check some boards out. Only worries I have is that I have OEM W7, and setting up the RAID again might be a pain.

As for the cooler I have a Hyper 212 that works great for my OC, and I don't want to push the OC farther. (im currently at 4.4 GHz) So I'm not looking to really switch that out, yet. :D

What do you mean by peripherals? ;)

Folding@Home. Protein folding to try and figure out why cancer develops, and such.

As for the OC I have it 24/7 stable at 4.4 GHz. I'm not looking to push this chip any farther, and I like what my temps are at. (60-65C)

Bit expensive though? I have a nice keyboard and mouse that only cost me $40 for both. ;)

That one, that one is a collectors item, here a cheaper one this is the same one using right now. Their well worth the extra money and it will have biggest impact when using a computer

Haswell is coming out on a new socket LGA 1150, and server editions may or may not use LGA 2011.

Oh, that makes more sense. But still, $60 for a mechanical keyboard? I already have a really nice one for gaming and such. Not so sure about that, but I may look into a different keyboard and mouse, cheaper though.

Oh OK, so then it's a whole new board. But yeah, I will look at some motherboards as well! Thanks for the advice.
