Hmm could be so many things let's try with the obvious. Let me start off by saying the U-Verse gateway/router is not the best for wireless range.

Are you getting the same speeds when directly wired into the U-Verse router? If not then the issue is with either the wireless adapter and/or the U-Verse router's capabilities.

Are you getting the same speeds with another wireless enabled computer connected to the U-Verse router? If not then the issue is with the wireless adapter and/or it's drivers.

Asus doesn't keep up with the drivers on these as well as one would expect. So try updating the drivers for said Wireless adapter -- windows drivers sometimes work better than the one drivers supplied on the CD.
