Buying the GPU for my Maiden America build soon. Opinions?

Thread Starter

Just like the title says, the time is soon approaching when I will buy the new GPU for my Maiden America build. Needless to say, I want to hear OCN's opinion on which one I should get.

So first things first (a good place for them, don't you agree?). I'm a college student on a budget, so I'm very interested in cost versus performance, as well as upgradeability for the future. This rig is used primarily for gaming, but I also use programs like SolidWorks and MATLAB for my degree, as well as doing some video/photo editing. I am also considering beginning to Fold@Home, once I reinstall my H100i and get my 3570K OC stable. Specs for my system are in my sig (sans displays)

In a nutshell:

  • Good cost vs. performance
  • I play BF3, Skyrim, MoH, PS2, etc.
  • My C70 can handle pretty much any size card and has great airflow.
  • Noise from the factory cooler is a concern for now, but I hope to eventually put everything underwater.
  • I do care about aesthetics. (Or at least the availability of a backplate, though I am not opposed to modding in order to get the look I want either)
  • I hope to eventually move to either at least a single large 1440p display, or 2+ 1080p displays (If SLI/Xfire will help with this, please say so, and remember, saving money on GPU means I can move to the new display(s) sooner)
  • I do plan to Xfire/SLI in the future
  • The max I would like to spend is around $400 for a single card.
  • I'm not opposed to buying a lightly used GPU if it would save me quite a bit, but I would prefer new.

I've been considering 3 cards, a GTX670 (preferably 4GB), or a 7950/7970.

I originally wanted this card, but have been reading lots of "7950 vs 670" threads lately:

EVGA GTX670 SC+ 4GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130785

I like the looks (and performance) of the Vapor X 7950, and the Sapphire and HIS 7970s:

VaporX 7950

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202003

Sapphire 7970

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202008

HIS 7970

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161412

I know the 7970 3GB is supposed to be comparable to the GTX 680, but is it worth the extra money over the 7950? Are there other 7950/7970 models you would recommend? I want the most control over my card possible through voltage and clocks.

Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

(*And because I'm proud of my build so far, and have no shameredface.gif)

7970 GHz Edition all the way, no contest really.

7970 will be the best card. Save money on ghz edition and overclock yourself.

670 is cheaper than 7970, plus has benefit of Physx

Edit: Nvidia users tend to have less issues with drivers, from what I have seen on here at least

Cool, thanks for the input guys.thumb.gif Are there any particular 7970s that are known to OC better than others, especially on air? I know most recommend the GB Windforce for that, but I didn't know if any of these other cards performed similarly.

Agreed, a 2GB 670 is less than a 7970. For the sake of having less problems as games progress (or as my Skyrim becomes more heavily modded for example), wouldn't I be better off with 3 or 4GB of VRAM?

Also, if I SLI/Crossfire eventually, how do programs handle the added VRAM on the second card?

Nothing beats the HD 7950 for price performance. Get the Sapphire HD 7950 boost .925 Mhz boost clocks. you can overclock the card to 1.1 Ghz at stock voltage and even higher with voltage tweaking. at the same clocks HD 7950 is 3 - 6% slower than HD 7970. but costs 20% lesser.

It unfortunately doesn't add up... if you SLI two 2GB cards... you'll still only have 2GB.
