OC Q9550 for XFX 780i nForce® SLI

Hi all.

Wanna ask some gurus here to help with this OC, as i havent done any OC before, so completely N00b.. Go thru some of the topics for Q9550 OC, but the info there is like for people who done that before. I dont think i will do any OC in future, but as for now i need to have it for my Game PC. I have 1 PC and i just have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 +drivers +games installed on it, nothing else, so mainly i wanna do this OC to increase FPS in my games, such as BF3.
Ok, 1st of all i wanna ask, saw some vids on youtube where random guys having almost same specs with me, but running the game (BF3) on 50+FPS (with Fraps On) on Ultra settings, but their CPU is like i5 or i7 which is above 3.4GHz.. Mine on everything Low getting the same FPS.. My Mobo is XFX 780i nForce, GPU is Gigabyte GTX 560ti Super Overclocked (By factory), 8Gb Kingston RAM (4x2Gbx800MHz) and q9550. CPU is air cooled by Asus Silent Knight (http://vr-zone.com/articles/-asus-introduces-silent-knight-ii-cpu-cooler-for-quad-core-processors-/5266.html), casing is Cooler Master.

So thought of speed up this baby till 3.6 or 3.8 GHz (whichever is higher and not required for additional cooling or changing of existing one) to have higher FPS in my games. My CPU rev is E0. I will provide any other PC info if need.

I s'pose this is legit..yeah..overclocking your cpu + RAM will help your framerates :yessir.gif:
idk about nvidia chipsets..i kinda avoid them cuz ..shooting for max overclocks..
increase vcore and nb voltage some..and raise the fsb..Wish i could help more.

Thx man.. Will wait for someone work with that staff. Wanna back up BIOS too, saw something about Checksum mismatch..

One question here, can do all this changes in Nvidia Control Panel in Windows or strictly/better in BIOS?

OK..

Due to my BIOS (Phenix) multiplier limitations (up to x8.0) i increase my FSB to 400MHz and get 3.2MHz. My Memory i set UNLINKED and leave it there with 800MHz.
But cant get it stable with CPU voltage
Tested it from range 1.12500V - 1.3500V and every time get this kind of errors
1. BSOD - 101
2. BSOD - 124
3. Freeze with Black screen
4. Restart - In windows logs says like not enough power supply.

Sometimes i it no problem with IBT 15 loops, but when i stress with games in Ultra settings - it BSOD after about 10min.. Temps ok..
The last one 1.3500 IBT - ok (max temp 76) , but the game freezes after 10min, but the windows continue working and now with no load CPU is 48..
Any suggestion? I read here that it is not recommended to go above 1.35, so i stop it here, but maybe Gurus have other thinking or maybe i shall adjust something else?

Lol.. Dudes!!!
I came here for help and ended up with looking and googling everything myself... Thanx for "Help" guys.. Hahaha..

So what i did is bump NB (Thanx Schmuckley, did it after reading your post again) by 1 notch (1.45V and is still in green range) and tested all Vcore voltages again from 1.12500V. It gets stable at 1.248V. Temps ok.. With 15 loops of IBT max is 68C. But as for me it is ok, as if im playing my games on 85% CPU load and its only 57-58C max.

Any more advise on the temps?

You may need to look into a bios update because that CPU has a 8.5x multiplier. Either that or look for a fine adjustment for the multi ratio in the bios.

Thanx for advise man, but as i said - did googled most of the thing )) . My Mobo is XFX, not EVGA, and i went to XFX support page, specially register there to have access for their updates - ended up with statement that the latest BIOS for this board is P08 which is my current version, but on EVGA same board have up to P10.. LOL.. That x8.5 Multiplier is unlocked with P09 update which i was not able to get, so stay with my current x8.0.. That N/2 unlock for an additional x0.5 multiplier is also can't find in my BIOS..
But is there anyone having CPU with 45-48C without load, is it acceptable or have to change the Cooler/Play with setting in BIOS?

Load temps are the ones you need to worry about . I tried to keep Q9450 under 75c for a 24/7 overclock.

I have both xfx and evga 780i mobos and have put my Q9550 in both, there is no such thing as the 8.5 multi being unlocked in a version of the bios. It was unlocked in every version. How do I know? Because the xfx has the Q9550 installed with the P08 bios and has the multiplier at 8.5.

Your CPU temps at idle are pretty much normal, anytime you overclock, your idle temps will go up unless you are still using speedstep (which I would hope you're not).
