Memory only running at 1333MHz

Hi,

I recently purchased a new machine and trying to figure out why my memory is only running at 1333MHz.

The details are:
G.Skill Trident-X 16GB Kit (4Gx4) DDR3-2400 Quad Channel
Gigabyte X79-UD3
i7 3820

I already have overclocked the CPU to 4.0GHz and it is running stable.
Everytime I try to enable XMP and up to 2400MHz or even 1600/1833 for that matter, it cycles until I clear the CMOS.
The M/B and Memory supports XMP and the Memory is rated at 2400MHz, what am I doing wrong??

Regards,

Tabmow

Does it still happen when ur cpu is not overclocked?

Yes it does.
I tried just the memory to start with and it still doesn't POST.

Lol. Your problem is that you bought 2400mhz memory. Chances are you can't run the memory at that speed. Ivy Bridge CPUs are the only chips that are capable of running 2400mhz. Not that it is impossible with x79, but it isn't common.

As for the problems with xmp....just ignore XMP. It is one of the most annoying features ever. Just manually set the ram and use memtest 86+ to test your stability.

Ok, I have seen people at least getting 2133MHz I guess that would suffice.
I am a bit of a 'noob' to the whole overclocking scene and really just want to do it because everything supports it (having never done it before).
Is there a guide somewhere on this site that I can read or is there a few pointers you can give me for CPU/Memory/GPU overclocking?

Yeup! http://www.techradar.com/us/news/computing-components/upgrades/how-to-overclock-your-ram-1030286

For the CPU it is really simple. First make sure you have a good after market CPU cooler. Second, raise your multiplier by 1 and boot into windows. Run a program called prime 95 and Core temp. Run a stress test and watch your CPU temperatures to make sure they stay below 85C. If you get errors in Prime 95, turn up your CPU voltage or Vcore. If you do that and you are stable at temperatures less than 85C...turn up your multiplier by another notch. Repeat the process until you your CPU reaches 85C.
