Looking for a new Motherboard.

Thread Starter
I am looking to purchase a new motherboard in the next week or so. I don't want to spend money on a board that has features that I will never use. Below I will detail a few things that I want to do with it, and what I don't want to do with it, and perhaps someone can suggest a good motherboard.

What I plan to do with it or want from it:

1: I want it to be AM3+ because I intend to purchase an FX-8350 within the next couple of months.
2: It will mostly be meant for heavily modded Gaming, watching HD video (1080p), recording 1080p video for Youtube, and possibly running a small four person Minecraft server.
3: Modest overclocking, nothing super crazy or record breaking. I am air cooing, using a CM Hyper 212 EVO on my 1090T, but plan on getting a Noctua NH-D14 with the FX-8350.
4: I am currently using a CM HAF X case, but may switch to a CM Storm Trooper/Storm Stryker in the future.
5: I would possibly like to get two HD 7970's in crossfire with room for a dedicated Nvidia PhysX card to replace the single HD 6970 that I am currently using.
6: A good amount of fan headers would be nice, but can use a y-splitter if needed.

What I don't plan to do with it:

1: I do not plan to use any form of water cooling in the near future.
2: I have never used or cared about RAID.
3: It does not have to have fancy on-board audio, 5.1 is more than enough for me, so better would just be a bonus,

Below are a few boards I have been looking at, but they may be more then what I need, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z
ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0
ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

Go with the ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z. If you can get it get it it is the best board the the FX series has if not that one get the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7 that is the second best board. No im not going on price Just facts I love both boards and they are the best way to go if you are going to do crossfire. Stay away from Asrock it like flipping a coin weather you will get a good board or not

Go Gigabyte ga-990fx-ud5 or ud7. They overclock equally and have those features you want. Otherwise you cpuld go with the Sapphire Pure Black 990fx

I just upgraded from a asrock n68-c ucc to an asus m4a88td-m evo to a biostar ta870+. So far the biostar ta870+ is the best. The td-m evo isn't bad either but it's broken and a bit complicated to handle. Especially overclocking didn't work for me. So the ta870+ is really nice it has also acc (to unlock the cores) and unlike the td-m evo some good overclocking presets. Bios is non-uefi ami bios with a memtest integrated!!! So I can recommend you my mainbord or with your budget and requirements I would also look for the biostar ta990fx.

I am leaning towards either the Crosshair V Formula-Z or the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7, with the CHV slightly in the lead.

I like how many fan headers the CHV has, so no need to buy any splitters.

The UD7 is currently on sale on Newegg, $164 after discount and rebate, which doesn't look like a bad deal, but I would have to pick up some splitters for all my fans, which would increase the price. I might wait a little and see if one of these boards gets the free 8g's of ram promo they have going as a bonus.

It also looks like the CHV has higher ram support, but I don't see myself buying 2400(OC) anytime soon. I also really like the look of the CHV's UEFI Bios.

I am currently using a GX Series RS750-ACAAD3-US 750W power supply. It is next inline to be upgraded, as I want something modular and with more power before I start using Crossfire. But until that happens, will it have the correct and/or enough power connectors for these boards?

I'm hoping you buy the CHV as well, that board is just a beast and has alot of head room to upgrade if needed. rumor is that steamrooler will be socket AM3+ so you will probably have the board for at least 3 to 4 years before it starts getting outdated and being able to support higher memory wont be bad ether. when the board starts getting outdated then you can pop in faster memory and expand the life just that much more longer thumb.gifsmile.gif

Im a huge Asus fan and aside from a few standouts like the MSI MPower Z77 board, I prefer Asus for all my motherboard needs. Out of your list, I prefer the Sabertooth. I just think theyre the best motherboards in whatever platform theyre built for. Bulletproof built quality, near indestructible components and build like a dream for overclockers. The Crosshair V is no slouch either and is as bulletproof as the Sabertooth but I just like the raw toughness of the Sabertooth. If youre leaning towards the Crosshair, I say get it. You wont be sorry. Buying the top of the line motherboard is never a bad idea.

I actually bought a Sabertooth a few weeks ago, it was my first choice based just on the look of it alone, but I received it DOA and sent it back. I like the look of the Sabertooth better than Crosshair, and both boards are practically identical when it comes to the amount of PCIe, sata, and usb slots. I probably will never use the ROG features of the Crosshair; I don't plan on doing anything super crazy overclocking wise, but it wouldn't hurt to have it.

I might just put the Sabertooth and the Crosshair in a hat and randomly pick.
