This is normal when the Load-Line Calibration is set high enough (the VCore Loadline Calibration).  Try lowering it by one setting.  Also, use a BIOS setting for the core voltage that results in 1.352V in CPU-Z while your CPU is under full load.

 

Also, I recommend Prime95's "Blend" test because the temps will be lower without sacrificing the stressfulness.

It's set to Auto, so it's very likely that C1E is already "kicking in".  I don't know much about C3 and C6.

Yes, you can enable EIST, C1E, C3 and C6 once you get it stable. They control the power saving features, the downclocking and downvolting that happens at idle. Once you get your stable overclock you'll also probably want to switch to a offset voltage so it'll downvolt, but one thing at a time. smile.gif

Well, what do you guys think?



Should I even bother running Prime95?

EDIT: Seems like lowering the calibration worked. The voltage is still set at 1.35V, but CPU-Z is displaying 1.344V right now. Is it acceptable?

Nevermind, got a BSOD now. What now?

Gonna try with 1.355V

Yes, because 12 runs of IBT is pretty much nothing.  I would recommend about 100 runs, or about 12-24 hours of Prime95's Blend test.  You can also do the Custom Blend test so that you can have Prime95 use about 90% of your memory instead of the 1600 MB it defaults to.

 

If you don't make sure it's stable like this, then you could end up regretting it later on.  ;)

Ok, current voltage is 1.355V, I'll try Prime95 right away. Which settings should I use?

EDIT: This is weird, I'm running Intel BurnTest, my voltage is set to 1.355V but CPU-Z is reporting 1.344V at full load... What's going on here?

EDIT 2: I changed my settings again to the following:

C1E - Disabled
C3/C6 - Disabled
EIST - Disabled
Vcore Voltage response - Auto
Vcore Loadline Calibration - High
Voltage - 1.355V

I ran Burntest again, 10 runs at Very High. It passed them, but the max temp was of 90ºC under BurnTest. I don't know wat to think. The voltage reported by CPU-Z was always around 1.356V.

Don't worry about the CPU-Z voltage, it's fine. Run Prime95 small ffts for at least 10 hours to ensure stability, that temperature is a bit too high though. It won't damage the CPU but I prefer to keep temps under 85 if possible.

Use Prime95's Blend test instead.  It is better because it's just as stressful, but the cores will not get as hot.  The reason why I recommend Blend is that the 2500K has an Integrated Memory Controller.  Therefore, the other 2 tests aren't as stressful.

 

Also, the voltage you see in CPU-Z is the actual voltage that is powering the CPU.  So, that's the only voltage that matters.  ;)

 

Also, for now, I recommend enabling C1E, C3/C6, and EIST.  I see no reason to disable them.  Disabling them was good in the old days when overclocking was done by adjusting the FSB.  The BCLK is like the FSB, but we're leaving it at 100.0 MHz, so these things are safe to have fully enabled.  The only time it's good to disable C3 and C6 is when using an Offset core voltage (which we'll get to much later on).

 

Finally, 90 degrees is still safe, but the temperature where it would automatically throttle itself down is 98.  So, stay aware of that.

The temps never go abote 90ºC, so I guess that's something.

I fired up Prime95. I notice that my voltage is sitting at 1.368V, that's what CPU-Z is reporting right now. I feel this shouldn't be. Perhaps we can tweak something?

Changed things a bit:
Voltage @ 1.355V
Voltage calbiration set to medium

When I run BurnTest, for some reason the boltage drops to 1.344V, causing a BSOD, but when running Prime95, the voltage stays at 1.356V... What shall I do?

I think the VCore Loadline Calibration can be lowered.  If that makes 1.368V go higher, then raise VCore Loadline Calibration.

I did set it to medium, but look at what happened under BurnTest... And sometimes, under Prime95, the voltage drops to 1.344V, but it goes back to 1.356V quickly.
