I want to download and play this, but it sounds like major server problems? I suppose I should wait?

I just have to laugh at you poor sods who firmly believe digital distribution is the way of the future of gaming and get shafted when your cheaper and "faster" digital copies don't get unlocked for whatever server reason. biggrin.gif

Me? I got my physical copy sitting on my doorstep from Amazon, unwrapped it, threw it into the computer and in less then 10 minutes, SimCity is up and running and patched on my machine. I'm just choosing the North American East 2 server to play until West 2 server comes online.

Old school is still the best way kiddos.

I'm honestly enjoying it. I'm a bit of an oldschool die hard, I almost wanted to hate this game... the changes sound horrible on paper. If you are expecting SC4 2.0, then you may be a little disappointed... but if you open yourself to the concept that this is a New SimCity game... not a rehash.. you'll see its pretty neat. Its true that your cities cant be massive anymore, but its been traded for a more personal relation to your city blocks. Placing zones etc is a bit more simplistic in this game... rather than making grids of zones etc, you can only place zones and buildings along roads. The rest of the space fills in naturally as your sims move in and expand.

I also feel that in the older sim city games, you would kind of "Set it and forget it" when you built a new area. You design it, build it.. then thats it, you wait for it to grow up. You might manage traffic a bit etc, but for the most part once the work was laid, you were done. This SimCity makes you genuinely micromanage blocks, pay attention to specific businesses and buildings, rather than just zones. You upgrade buildings, and... yeah I dont know, im not a professional reviewer, but hopefully you get the gist of what I'm saying.

Its also important to note that your city in this game will need to "specialize" into a certain type of city. Coal industry, a tech town, a gambling refuge, a college town, etc. You cant do it all effectively.. and they dont want you to. The whole point is to connect your little hamlet to other players (or yourself i guess) and establish trade and cooperation. You can change your city and grow it over time though.. mine out all the coal for starting cash, then convert it into tech etc. If you think of "regions" in this game as the city, and the "city" as a neighborhood, you'll get a more accurate view of the landscape. You are no longer building a metropolis... you are creating a sector of a city, one which makes up a whole with your neighbors.

Its pretty neat. I'm only a short bit in, we'll see how it goes. There is a lot of detail in your city now... heres another screenshot.

I was able to start playing last night between 330 and 4a. A whole lot of fun. I did have to play on a non North American server though. Can't until I get home to play some more.

For those worried about the city size, they've said they do plan to increase it

http://www.overclock.net/t/1367998/rock-paper-shotgun-fear-not-maxis-planning-to-expand-simcity-s-cities/0_40

Also, having watched some Let's Plays of it, it really does seem like the entire region is equivalent to a city in one of the older games, and the cities HAVE to work together for you to really grow (for example you can't build a community college or university until you have a City Hall somewhere in the region with a Department of Education, and you can't get all the Departments attached to one City Hall as far as I can tell. It's an interesting system. It seems more dynamic and you can really tell that everything IS simulated. I'm also a big fan of the upgrade system.

Still not buying it on release, though (only game I will do so for will be Rome Total War II tongue.gif.

As long as it isnt Pay DLC then I might buy the game, eventually... if the sizes are actually, bigger and not just twice the size of current.

Anyone else's GPU running like mad while playing this game??

Free DLC for any Sims game, let alone Free DLC from EA? Nah...

The game's design is so heavily centered on the current city size that making them bigger isn't going to simply be a matter of drawing a bigger square on the map. The entire experience is centered around creating multiple small cities and having them interact, making just one or two larger cities with no interaction is going to throw a wrench into a lot of things that they think makes the game desirable.
