I'm honestly enjoying it. I'm a bit of an oldschool die hard, I almost wanted to hate this game... the changes sound horrible on paper. If you are expecting SC4 2.0, then you may be a little disappointed... but if you open yourself to the concept that this is a New SimCity game... not a rehash.. you'll see its pretty neat. Its true that your cities cant be massive anymore, but its been traded for a more personal relation to your city blocks. Placing zones etc is a bit more simplistic in this game... rather than making grids of zones etc, you can only place zones and buildings along roads. The rest of the space fills in naturally as your sims move in and expand.
I also feel that in the older sim city games, you would kind of "Set it and forget it" when you built a new area. You design it, build it.. then thats it, you wait for it to grow up. You might manage traffic a bit etc, but for the most part once the work was laid, you were done. This SimCity makes you genuinely micromanage blocks, pay attention to specific businesses and buildings, rather than just zones. You upgrade buildings, and... yeah I dont know, im not a professional reviewer, but hopefully you get the gist of what I'm saying.
Its also important to note that your city in this game will need to "specialize" into a certain type of city. Coal industry, a tech town, a gambling refuge, a college town, etc. You cant do it all effectively.. and they dont want you to. The whole point is to connect your little hamlet to other players (or yourself i guess) and establish trade and cooperation. You can change your city and grow it over time though.. mine out all the coal for starting cash, then convert it into tech etc. If you think of "regions" in this game as the city, and the "city" as a neighborhood, you'll get a more accurate view of the landscape. You are no longer building a metropolis... you are creating a sector of a city, one which makes up a whole with your neighbors.
Its pretty neat. I'm only a short bit in, we'll see how it goes. There is a lot of detail in your city now... heres another screenshot.
