I've already heard that a FLV pack will allow for bigger cities. Thank god cause I'm tired of people complaining

Has anyone else had problems with Simcity crashing their computer entirely?

Ever since the update two days ago when playing the game my computer will restart entirely. Sometimes after an hour of playing, some times after only 5 minutes. I initially thought it was my OC being unstable, despite the fact that I've been running it for over a year, and it plays BF3 maxed without issue.

I stress tested the CPU (i7-930 @ 3.8), and the GPU (Titan @stock) and neither of them showed any issues. At launch I was playing the game at 5760x1200 which worked fine until a couple of days ago. I dropped the res down to a single 1920x1200 to try and isolate the graphics as an issue and it does the same thing. I took my OC off completely and ran the CPU at stock speeds and it still has the same issue. I also ran windows memory check and it came back with 0 errors.

The event viewer shows Critical Event ID 41. I only have this issue while playing simcity. The cpu load across 4 threads was at 25% at it's highest and the temp never got above 125 F.

I'm at a loss on what to do. Is there any other hardware issue that could be causing this? It has never once occurred outside of playing the game.

Try running BF3 for a couple hours at 5760x1200 right now. It's possible your power supply is dying to give that behavior. Also, update your sig rig, makes troubleshooting easier.

Seems no matter the overclock, mine either crashes or just wont even launch. I can run crysis3 at 4.5 stable with no issues. With the same overclock sim city wont launch. Its there in task manager but thats it.

I've had that bug a couple times where the launcher is invisible (audio plays), but normally killing the process and trying again fixes it, don't think I've ever had it twice in a row. Only crash I've gotten I am not even sure what happened since I went to fill my drink, answered the phone in another room and came back to SimCity not responding thinking.gif

I've been reading over on the EA forums of a bunch of people having the same issue.

I ran BF3 for over an hour maxed without any issue (as always). I also ran EVGA stress test and intelburn at the same time for an extended period of time and also had no issues.

From everything I've read I have come to the conclusion that it is a problem with the game and not my hardware.

Interesting. Actually crashing at the hardware level is quite hard to do from a program.

One theme that seems to be playing in this thread is that: Ooh the simulation may be instense can my computer even run larger cities??
And then there a lot of posts to either support this fear or assail it.

My thinking is that, with all that Maxis/EA junk about server-side calculations and all this we modeled it to run on low end PCs... we may consider larger cities if PC hardware advances..... blah blah blah. Personally... all of this misleading information is pure BULL.

it take more calculations to rotate all the vectors and realign the matrix data of a 3D model and print view matrix from the viewport to your Screen than it is to calculate the age of each person each year of 1,000,000 persons.

you want proof? consider...
Quote:
or(int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)
{
sims.Age++;
}
///one million additions - this is actually very fast

FIRST EXAMPLE is just math on some variables... or you can say the Simulation mechanics
we are aging each Sim by one year. And we have One Millions Sims.

Quote:
for (int i = 0; i < 100000; i++) ///to be fair - lets use only a hundred thousand buildings
{
Matrix[] transforms = new Matrix[model.Model.Bones.Count];
model.Model.CopyAbsoluteBoneTransformsTo(transforms);

foreach (ModelMesh mesh in model.Model.Meshes)
{
foreach (BasicEffect effect in mm.Effects)
{
effect.View = camera.view;
effect.Projection = camera.projection;
effect.EnableDefaultLighting();
}
mesh.Draw();
}
}
2nd Example uses MUCH more work, even though we have 1 factor less amount of items to calculate
And todays GFX cards can do this easy... which means our CPU can do the 1st example....very easy

we can have large cities... this small city restriction is part of the MMO grand stratedgy they are trying to force on us...

Interesting

A lot could be assumed... But as a fellow programmer I also know that there is always more than what some schmuck comes up with in his hello world example. There must be a reason why the current city limits are thrashing your vid card as it sits now... Think what would happen if the city was twice the size... Of not more...

Cities XL has 20 times the size of current SimCity 16slot regions.
Has no issues.
"oh but it doesnt simulate anything!" well neither does simcity really.

My 680 doesnt even do anything in simcity, sits at 800mhz most of the time and 40-50% usage.
CPU about the same.

Thing is, SimCity is not GPU intensive as theres very little for the GPU to actually do.
It /may/ be CPU intensive, but honestly, no just no.

The game was designed to run on low-end PCs to appeal to dads and moms with "old" PCs.
