graphics cards - new user needs help choosing right card - geforce vs radeon, pixel gp/s, texture gt/s???? help?

hiya i wonder if i could ask some advice

im looking for a graphics card for my system

ive looked at a few and checked out their specs on wiki, but i know almost nothing about what i need most, or whats best in terms of things like - pixel gp/s, texture gt/s, bandwidth, gflops, and wether any of the other technical stuff like no. of transistors, die size etc is relevant to me.

to break it down im looking for a relatively low end card, i was trying to educate myself on what the differences are but the amount of work looks vast.

im mainly unsure about the different merits of the geforces or radeons

im looking at something like a radeon 6350 to a 6450, or maybe even a 4850 i spotted on ebuyer, so looking about £30-£50 or £60

i was also looking at geforce GT 610 to a GT 630

also, does the maker of the card matter much? ive use xfx in the past and i was happy with them. i would prefer to stick to a reliable brand.

i mainly use my system for light photoshop and illustrator work, casual gaming (civ 4, and 5 soon), blu-ray, and i keep a lot of internet browsing tabs open (30+), and generally like to have many programs working at the same time, with some in the background such as just p2p downloaders.

what kind of card is the best for me?
can you give me any advice on what would suit my system and needs more, a radeon or geforce?
is there a specific thing i should be looking for such as pixel gp/s, texture gt/s or shaders etc.

any help would be appreciated.

i know i can get a basic card and not worry too much about it, but id like to get the best card for my system, with the right features.

i know the basics such as DDR5 is better than DDR3, but that may not be neccessary for me.
i need a HDMI output, other than that nothing is essential but good functioning.

my system -

athlon II x3 455 (3.3GHz)
asus M4A78-HTPC mobo with pci e 2.0 slot (may be upgrading to a new mobo with 2.1) (780G chipset and SB700 southbridge)
2GB DDR2 RAM (400MHZ CPUz is telling me)
with a very basic on-board radeon HD 3200 256MB

and if it matters -
samsung 128GB SSD
with a couple of samsung spinpoint f1 1TB HDDs
ill leave the rest off cos i dont think it matters

hope you can help

thanks in advance

chris

This 7750 might not be a bad buy, but I know nothing of that brand.

I like my sapphire 7970 and here is a 6670 that probably wouldn't be a bad choice either.

ok thanks

the 7750 is a bit expensive for me, and the VTX3D is an unknown brand for me.

the 6670 looks ok, but what about something cheaper?

I definatly would suggest the 7750, Or if you can squeeze it in look on ebay for a GTX 460 2gb, OR just an ordinary gtx 460
