URGENT HELP NEEDED !!!!! CAN'T START UP WINDOWS !!!!!

Thread Starter
I need urgent help guys, so please help me out.
Ok, so here's the deal.
My friend bought Nero Burning ROM 11.
Now, she wanted to install it, but the problem is that it requires Service Pack 3 considering she has Windows XP.
Now, she is not some computer expert, so she told me to resolve her problem.
I downloaded Service Pack 3 from Microsoft's website, and installed it.
Once it was finished, there was a check box which was labeled as "Don't reboot now".
So i left that unchecked since rebooting is important.
After it restarted it said:

" Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
/System32/Hal.dll>"

And then the PC restarted and started normally.
After that i went to the internet and looked up that problem.
I find one solution with changing the Boot.ini from here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm

After reading that, i changed Boot.ini to this:
"[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
"
After doing that, i restarted PC.
After doing that there were too OS's i could boot from:

"Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

And

"Microsoft WIndows 2000 Professional"

Now the thing is, i can barely click any of unless i move arrow to down so timer of 1 second would stop.
But the problem is that whichever i click on, i get the same error, and a restart of a PC.
Now, i also tried to boot Windows XP so i could enter Recovery Console as i've read it some else also.
But the problem is no matter which WIndows XP CD i put, Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 there is always text:
"Boot from CD/DVD:"

The Boots in BIOS are:
"First Boot: CD-ROM"
"Second Boot: Hard Disk"
"Third Boot: Hard Disk"

I always used those 2 CD's before when installing WIndows XP, but not it looks like it wont load, at least on my friends PC.
But i also tried to used some XpressRecovery2 from Gigabyte CD, since it is Gigabyte Motherboard (not sure which one), and it loads perfectly.
Also there is one more problem.
Whenever i try to boot in Safe Mode, Last Configuration that was good etc....
I always have to choose again from both of those OS's, and no matter which one i choose it's the same problem.

So, can anyone tell me with which one version of Windows XP Service Pack should i choose, because i want to find a new one from somenone.

Please help, i caused this mess so it's my responsibility to fix it.

Thanks smile.gif

.....Do her a HUGE favor and just get her a whole new OS. Nobody should have to deal with XP in this day and age tongue.gif
I'd say you were doomed when you played with the .ini file. If it booted fine the second time, why fix it?
Id suggest fixing that file to what it previously was (maybe by copying an original). OR wipe the HDD and install a new OS.

Sounds like you stuffed her up messing with the .ini file mate, never play with those i say.
Plug her HDD into your Sata ports and copy all the stuff she needs, format the HDD and reinstall Windows XP.
That's the only sure fire way to fix it now.

Guys, i also heard to attempt a Linux install so i could transfer files to a USB, so could that work without actually installing the Linux on the HDD and just boot into it, also what Linux is best for that ?

Also there is another way of solving this problem.
I have to download a Windows Recovery Console only, so i don't know will that work, does anyone know ?

Thanks smile.gif

i agree, we still have to use XP in the office and its a nightmare, constant random crashes, difficult to recover from missing ini files, not to mention its only 32 bit so only 3.5gb of ram. format reinstall is the best fix for XP systems, but seriously, if your friends PC is at least 2ghz with 1-2gb of ram just get a copy of windows 7 and save yourself tons of headaches (XP is over 11 years old... )

Nobody seriously said system restore? It creates one before any/all SPs are installed. Hit F8 when your bios screen comes up, then repair / restore (been a while since I had to do one, forgot the exact name of it... figure it out! ). Do a ccleaner / diskchk / defrag in that order, then download and install SP3 again.

Tech support 101.
