AMD Phenom X6 1045T VS AMD Phenom X4 965

Hello OCN fellows,

I have been using intel mostly, but I wanted to try out amd cpu.

I am looking at tigerdirect right now and I came up with two options.

1. amd phenom x6 1045 retail box $100 shipped

2. amd phenom x4 965 oem $75 shipped

I recently got myself a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=4QANIkWJEeK0FsKe19bShwhpR1_EYGJ3_SeK_0_0&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16813131872

I mostly play bf3, WoW, and plans to multi task (adobe photopshop, etc)

Which CPU is better and why?

Thanks in advance!

speaking of having the 1045T the extra two cores wont give you a great advantage as opposed to higher overclock on the x4, and the x4 has an unlocked multiplier so thats better. id go for 965 B.E considering its 3.4 Ghz stock and you can easily o/c to 4 Ghz i went from 2.7 to 3.6 on my x6 and i could do 3.7 but decided to stick with 3.6 also its cheaper the 965 if i had to do it again id probably go for a 965 for sure!

Thanks for you advice!
amd x4 965 oem is none B.E. I believe and retail amd x4 965 BE edition is $89.99. That's $10 difference from 1045T.
Do you think buying amd x4 965 BE retail box for $90 is better than buying 1045T for $100?

Yes id go for the 965 B.E. but im not htat knoweledgable from what ive heard the Unlocked CPUs give you greater advantage over the locked ones tongue.gif (multiplier) id wait for a more experienced members opinion, tongue.gif the x6 at 3.6 ghz is not bad itself so yeah sorry for being all over the place tongue.gif

Yeah I kinda think the 965 is the better way to go too. So many things still rely on clock speed these days and that 965 is going to have a lot more overclocking headroom. Since that 1045 is locked, you can only overclock by FSB and thats going to be limited by how far the motherboard will go up. Some boards can go up to 300 while others cant get passed 225. But that X4 with its unlocked multiplier is going to be a lot easier to stretch its legs.

Buy the BE 4 core (The OEM sku is a Black Edition). I have read that the 4 cores do a little bit better in gaming than the 6 or 8 core, but I have no personal experience. The BE will let you play a bit with the chip a little bit.

EDIT: That cpu number says it is a downgraded 140W chip to 125W, and overclockable.

EDIT 2: I believe what is throwing you is one is a retail, and the other is OEM. The OEM does not include the stock cooling solution.

The BE will allow for better OC. This is due to allowing an unlocked multiplier. Where as a T= Turbo will only allow the multiplier to go so high. I believe its 17 max. Both of them will reach close to 4.0 but the BE will let you get to 4.2 to 4.5. Now the difference with 2 extra cores comes vs an unlocked multiplier that is a tough one. BUT we can settle with both and go a 1100T BE that will give you both an unlocked multiplier AND 6 cores. But they are hard to find as they have discontinued making them for the new BE chip 8150 and then the 8350.

I say go ahead and spring for the retail version. $10 extra and you have a spare heat sink should you ever need one. Cant hurt.
