Make sure they are plugged into USB 2.0 slots. I'm not sure about all motherboards, but I know the few I worked with that have USB 3.0 wouldn't register anything in those slots outside of Windows.

I've set the SSD as 1st in the boot priority because a friend told me that the OS should be installed on the SSD, to allow for more efficiency. Is this correct?

Another option is hdd is not recognized, cant you see it in your bios/select it as boot device at all?
