Replacement for GTX 260m?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I have an Alienware M15x with an aging and badly unstable GTX 260m. Crashes to redscreen quite often on DirectX10 games. I am disappoint.

Plus, it's pretty weak overall... So I'm looking for a replacement. Here's a few questions

GTX 460m? If so, which one? I've heard there are many different models with different amounts of cores and VRAM. Also, would it fit into the MXM slot? Would thermals be the same? Would the heatsink still cover what it needs to?

Or could I go for something even more powerful like a 560m, 570m, or 680m? Something like that?

If anybody has experience replacing Laptop GPUs, please chime in. smile.gif

I have experience in replacing the whole laptop haha biggrin.gif... Why don't you just sell your laptop and get something better. I sold my dell xps 17 with a 550m and got a lenovo Y580 with the 660m and ivybridge cpu... Usually with me, i know laptop's don't have good parts replacement, so i sell them under a year, probably take out a hardrive and sell it 100$ cheaper, almost like i never lost a dime wink.gif.... I'll advice you sell it, you can get a laptop with better specs for 750$. I mean with a 660m gpu, and just as portable, with a better cpu...

That's just my opinion though, If you can get a 680m gpu then hell yes!. but i don't know much about actually upgrading parts of a laptop, as it's a waste of money to me.

I know a lot of people would jump on your alienware if you sell it for a good price.

Well the best GPU M15x officially supports is the 5850m but these laptops are still being upgraded with the latest GPU's by the users. some requiring more modding than others.
Check this place out for all your alienware needs lol

I found it to be a very helpful and knowledgeable community. Also its not so hard to remove the GPU and you can find a video on how to do it on the site i linked...

PS sorry if im not meant to link other sites, just trying to help someone out xD

Hmm...I've considered that. An appraisal thread I made a few months back said she'd likely fetch $1000.....

Thanks! I appreciate that! Also, just to clarify, the TOS forbids links to exterior site IF the information that is linked to is readily available here on OCN. Also, links to external sites in your sig are not allowed other than CPUz validations.

And obviously, links to pornographic or offensive materials are a big no no
