Help Upgrading My Rig

Thread Starter
Hey, 6 months a go I built my first rig, it all went well and I'm very pleased with it.
I'm now looking to upgrade it in a few ways, and I was looking for some help.

My rig is in my sig.

There are a few things I'd like help with.

Over clocking is one of them, from what I've seen, people seem to have a bit of trouble over clocking the 8120, is that due to cooling?
Another is cooling in general, I'd like to be able to bring that up to par with the other specs.

Maybe somebody could just help me out by rating my build and pointing out some places for improvement.

I've only just started getting into building and stuff this year, so I'm fairly inexperienced.
But I obviously know enough to not mess up a build eh?
Thanks:thumb:

What cooling are you using now? Overclocking seems like it would be cheapest and easiest performance upgrade for you. Also what monitor/resolution are you running at? Like it would silly to suggest a better videocard if your not even running @ 1080p.

I'm using the standard CPU fan that came with my FX 8120. I understand that if I'm going to overclock I'm going to need an after market heatsink, but I'm unsure what I'd be looking for.
Also I couldn't find my monitors name, but it's a 27" ASUS, running a 1920 x 1080 res

Yes cooling is great. Since your sig rig suggests a theme I would say go for the Corsair H100i for the cpu.
My experience points towards needing a new video card depending on how much and what kind if any gaming you do. My 1GB 5770 was choked by 1080p. Right now the sweet point price vs performance wise is either the HD7950 or GTX 660ti.

Ah ok. Well your CPU cooling options are either going to be something like:

Aircooling with a huge heatsink:
Example: ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118059 $48

Self contained Watercooling:
Example: Corsair H60 (should probably add a 2nd fan to it) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015 $55

or a custom watercooling kit.

I just picked some options that balance price/performance. You could easily spend more on either.

Okay thanks for the feedback guys, both very helpful!
I think an aftermarket heatsink is probably best for me right now, I plan on looking into watercooling on a second build which I should be doing next year.
Also, this is a very small and kind of stupid question...
But as you may know the Obsidian case has 3 built in fans, they haven't span for a while.
I have the the molex plug attached to the power supply from behind (the rear of the molex plug) but nothing seems to happening.
What have i done wrong here?
I'd like to have the fans controlled from the case controller at the top?

EDIT: After looking around it seems my my fan controller has burnt out, this seems to be a common occurrence with these cases.
I'm now looking at how to connect these to my motherboard.
Jesus i'm a noob.

For now just get a heatsink and practice cable management, this will be the time to hide all those cable and get better air flow through out your case

Funny you say that... Cable management is how i spent my morning.
One of my main problems with my cables is my semi modular pws.

Your cable management looks really good, although you should probably grab some air duster for your CPU heatsink. I see alot of dust in there.

We have the same ram, GFX card, and DVD/CD Burner biggrin.gif

Everything looks good to me, I would recommend an aftermarket cooler if you want to overclock though, the first bulldozers can run very hot.
