BIOS detects Windows HDD but it will not boot

Thread Starter
Apologies if this thread will have typos because I can not use my laptop right now, so I am typing this on my phone.

My laptop HDD (And OS drive) is failing, so I bought a new HDD to replace it. My HDD was for most of the time up until now in my odd bay (while an ssd was in my HDD bay). However, just before I took my ssd out and put my old HDD back into that bay, while the new HDD went into my odd bay(where it was going to stay). I was going to clone and take out my old HDD. But when
I booted up with both of them connected, I got the "insert bootable drive" message.

So I thought maybe I didn't push in my HDD like I thought. So I did and then booted up, same message. Then I tried taking my new blank HDD out and booted up, moved my old HDD back to my odd bay, ect. I tried everything I could do externally and still got the same message. Then I went into my bios. my drive was there, but for some reason it isn't detecting the OS so it won't boot!

I don't know what happened as I was just using it an hour ago just fine. My drive might've died in that time, but would it still show up in the bios? I just moved, and I'm waiting for my boxes to arrive which have my external odd in it, so I cannot boot from the windows disk just yet. In the meantime though is there anything I can do?

Thank you!!

If the SSD disappeared from your BIOS, then...

Disconnect it entirely for 15 minutes, plug it back in, and then see if it shows up.

If not, then it panicked. Sometimes SSDs get confused and lock themselves... Sandforce ones are more prone to it than Crucial M4's, or Intel SSDs. You'll have to RMA.

Had a issue like that, was a boot file in windows wasn't right. Ended up just re-installing my OS, and immediately took the OS CD out of the drive when installed, so it would stop using the boot file form the CD and use the one installed on the HDD.
Its a change of BIOS settings you need. Similar thing happened when I added a new SSD and swapped around the SATA cables to accomodate it. The BIOS is picking up all the harddrives, but you need to select which harddrive is the boot-drive. For some reason Asus boards tend to change the boot settings when you swap drives around.

I can't remember exactly where the setting is (also have Asus mobo, ROG MVG), but I know there are two. The first one just changes the boot priority between the two of the drives (which in my case ended up being my media storage drives). There is a second setting in the drive list I think where you can set a drive to be the bootdisc. Just scratch around in the BIOS, I know it is there. Can only get to my PC in about 2 hours if you need screens of the settings

Sorry, I was skimming - I assumed because you had an SSD, you were using it as the OS drive that you mentioned later.

If you've ruled out all the BIOS stuff (the most likely cause...) try startup repair from your Win7 DVD. (or a Win8 DVD also works)

I recently cloned a drive - worked fine dozens of times before, but this particular time I ended up with a blinking line rather than a bootable system. I had to run the startup repair tools to fix it and make the drive bootable. No idea why it went wrong like that, but every once and a while things go haywire.

The only drive in my laptop is my boot drive. The bios detects it but it will not boot up. Don't know what I could of done, it was fine a couple of minutes before I took it out. Maybe it did die. I'll use the windows 7 cd when my cd drive gets here.

Just a quick update and a question. So I plugged my old HDD into my desktop, tried startup repair tool (including the fix MBR command line), as well as BCD visual editor (and the dual boot tool to repair BCD and boot records), but when I plugged my HDD back into my laptop it still wouldn't boot!

So I just said screw it, plugged both hdd's into my desktop(I had to create a new volume for the new HDD to show up) and cloned my old hdd on my new drive using TrueImage WD edition. And it worked! I could boot on my laptop!

So my question is, was the problem solely my HDD? Seeing that an exact copy of my files works on a new hard drive where it wouldn't on another, its safe to assume so, but I'm afraid it also copied corrupt windows files (that may have caused the hard drive not to boot?) And ill encounter a problem again. Or am I just worrying, and it was just a dying drive?

Also it made my new HDD the same size as the old one, but I extended the volume in the disk manager. Will this cause any errors?

Thanks so much for helping me!! Never had a hard drive fail so I want to mske sure everything should be good now.

The HDD had some sort of issue - compatibility, or it's ill in some way. An exact copy of your files working fine means that it's probably the drive rather than the files on the drive - unless of course Acronis corrected something while copying.

Nope. I usually do that anyway - I install Windows to a small ~40-80GB partition, then extend it if necessary. That way the MFT and all the other NTFS crap end up at the start of the drive. (Fastest)

Run sfc /scannow from a command prompt if you want to check for corrupt files. If it reports back that everything is okay, then you're in the clear. It may also report back that it fixed stuff, in which case you're probably also in the clear.
