Have a 2gb gtx 680, and will SLI, but will i need a 4gb gtx 680

im sort of new to this, so excuse me for my newbness. i know it that is recommended to sli with the exact cards, but since i've purchased a 1440p ips monitor, ive noticed that i can't play games like witcher 2 on max settings. as i was doing research on why, i saw that it was probably due to the higher resolution of my monitor, and that certain games require more than the 2gb of vram to use to run max. is this true? i was going to buy the exact card to do sli, but if there are games out there or in the future that will require more than 2gb of vram to play at max settings. would it be wise to me to get a 4gb gtx 680 and get the most for performance?

my other question is, if i put the 4gb card at the top as my primary card and sli it with my 2gb 680, will it still register as 4gb? or can you only do 4gb sli cards to have 4gb of vram? im also doing a custom watercooling loop in the next month, and if i need to get a 4gb 680, will any gtx 680 waterblock be compatible with 4gb 680s? i understand most are designed after reference pcbs, so would this model be compatible with any waterblock since it looks like a reference design. the thing is, i have this superclocked 680, and seeing as the 4gb i mentioned earlier has a vanilla core and boost clock, can i choose other 4gb 680s to match my 2gb 680 base and boost clock?

SLI will automatically default to the clocks/vram of the least value card.

4GB SLI w/ 2GB = 2GB
1000MHz SLI w/ 950MHz = 950MHz

The 690 is actually only 2gb of effective vram also. 2gb for each gpu and they call it 4gb but it's not.

I have the EVGA GTX 680 FTW 4gb w/backplate. It's a non-reference design but EK decided to make some full cover blocks for this model. It's on there website and it's the cards I have in my pictures with the 3 way sli water bridge.

Here is the link to the full cover block for my 4gb 680's.

just make sure that the 690 is actually 4gb..

im not quite sure but when there are dual gpu, it acts as if one card is SLI.. so really you just have 2x2gb cards with both 256-bit x2.. someone hopefully chimes in.

best bet would go AMD if you really want...

so far i have gtx 670 ftw and yeah at 1440p i do get over 2gb in bf3 new aftermath expansion and on skyrim... :\

omg, thank you for pointing that out. the reason why i mentioned the 690 is because i thought it would be cheaper to get one card with one water block, and also that my mobo only has 1 pcie 3.0 x16

you know what, even tho i love physx, i never owned or tried a amd gpu. since ive heard the 7970s latest driver is currently beating the 680, i think i might just go this route.

another quick question if i do get a 7970, can i run both cards separately on 1 mobo? yes, im crazy enough to do it cuz i still love my 680 lol

I know multiple cards is possible but I'm not sure about diff brands cause of driver issue.

They have pros and cons but I'm definitely thinking about it to cause that vram problem is real

word. well, i just read something from another forum, and at this late in the year, its pretty much pointless for me to "upgrade" when amd and nvidias flagships are around the corner. i think ill just save my money, stick with my 2gb 680 and wait and see what these guys have to offer next year, hopefully its a better transition for owners who have beastly 1440p monitors. still gonna do my water loop, but only for my cpu now. anyway, thanks guys
