oddmut...have you just recently installed the ram? Meaning added to the ram you already had ? I had a similar problem when I added 8gb to the 4gb I already had. The usable ram went way down when I checked the "computer properties". I also had my SSD filling up fast.

edit : i ended up using Sean'W7 install guide and it made my ram report correctly and as a bonus it kept my SSD from filling up

hmmmm i'm not quite sure if you read through the thread thoroughly enough, because the links you gave me are for SSDs, but i'll go ahead and explain it again. no problem.

i was running 2x4GB GBRL ram from GSkill. I purchased 2x4GB GBXL ram from GSkill. After installing the GBXL ram i got BSODs and instant reboots. I then contacted GSkill and they sent out a matching set of 4x4GB GBXL ram. I tested each piece of ram in slots 1 and 3 and the ram sticks are working. The OS detects all 4 but only 2 are usable.
