I am looking to trade in my wii for the wii u in july for an anniversary present for me and my wife. I have read on somewhere else on the web that nintendo is abandoning the wii u for the their next system ( the nx?).

Is this true?

Hasnt been confirmed. I honestly believe that the Wii u will have roughly a 4 year lifespan (like the game cube) so that would mean that its replacement would launch at the end of 2016 (which kindof lines up with rumors that one of AMDs semi custom is likely a Nintendo SoC)

I don't own any amiibos, they look cool, but I hear nothing about how they have outrageous prices because of low stock and poor supply on Nintendo's end. I haven't really looked into prices or anything because I just don't care, but that's what I hear. $100 for a POS plastic figure that adds a costume in a game isn't fricken worth it. I'd rather spend my money on something I can actually, you know, DO SOMETHING with. Like retro games.

I'd rather spend my money on something I can actually, you know, DO SOMETHING with. Like retro games.

If you play smash bros then amiibos allow you to create custom computer controlled players to play with (which I find very enjoyable)

If you have toads treasure tracker then a Toad amiibo allows you to unlock a mode where you have to find a pixel toad in a level

Mario Party 10 has an amiibo mode (which I found frustrating due to all the tapping of amiibos on the game pad)

Hyrule warriors unlocks weapons if you have Legend of Zelda amiibos other amiibos gives you random stuff.

The unreleased splatoon amiibos will unlock random cosmetic items in game (can't remember if they do anything else)

Kirby amiibos (meta knight, king dedede & Kirby) unlock powerups for rainbow curse.

So far the only games that actually save data to the amiibos are Mario Party 10 and Smash

Yes the resale value of mint amiibos can be rather annoying (ie $100+ for villager) but that price is based on what people are willing to pay. However if you stick to retail availability then they are about $13-$17 (Canada prices) consider the second hand market for amiibos highly volatile. They haven't been out for very long. They aren't numbered. So if Nintendo decides to make more/import more they can. And if they do this then the value of these amiibos will plummet. Best chance of getting one that holds its value would be Mega Man and Pacman simply because Nintendo doesn't own the rights to those characters and may need to negotiate another contract with Capcom if they want to make more.
Personally I enjoy collecting them and appreciate what they add to a game. However my limit for second hand purchases is $25 (about 2x the retail price) for characters I want (so Rosalina, Gold Mario, King Dedede and Meta Knight are currently outside of my price range)

I currently own:
Sonic, 2x sheik, Mega Man, toon link, Link, Zelda, (from smash series) peach, Mario, Luigi, toad, Bowser.(Mario edition)
Preordered: Wario, Ness and Lucina
Want: Rosalina, Gold Mario, King Dedede, Meta Knight, Samus Aran (hoping to hear from a Kijiji Seller for this one)

I like that the amiibo functionality is optional, it would irritate me if it wasn't. Especially considering how difficult it is to actually get them at retail
