As much as THQ is trying to give out the whole "we're the good guys" image, which they are doing a good job at, I really think this is mostly in preparation to the SteamBox which will be using Linux. THQ is betting their money that it will be a huge success, and hopefully get them out of the trouble they are in by being early adopters in case it hits off, and publish their games on it while other developers are still too busy porting their apps to Steambox.

Well even if that is the reason its still a win-win situation. Thq gets to sell their games on steambox we get to use their games on linux.

I knew this would happen...I've been thinking for years that if Steam started supporting gaming on Linux you'd start to see a move to Linux by some developers and publishers. Hopefully this is just the beginning and we will see more smaller publishers and devs hopping on board. It could also start and end with THQ.

One of the reasons I like PC gaming is due to the customization aspect of it. I can modify the graphics, I can change the hot keys and controls, I can even modify the games...it is all about the games and the gaming machine to be as customizable as possible. Does that not just fit in with the mission of Linux perfectly? If you ask me the gaming "platform" on PCs should have always been Linux.

The professional part of me...will always be partial to Microsoft. What they offer on the Server and database side of things are simply incredible. However, I've been getting this feeling that Microsoft is caring less and less about PC gaming. I don't really know why I feel like that, but I do...been feeling like that since they killed hardware acceleration for sound since Vista. Plus I can't help but think that some one around MS headquarters probably thinks that PC gaming is cutting into their Xbox profits...and perhaps it is in a way.

I've just been foreseeing a bleak future for Windows gaming. I've been really concerned that Apple was going to pick up the PC gaming torch since there are more and more games being made available on Macs and I am quite certain that is something NOBODY wants...or at least very few people anyway.

Never said it wasn't. The only thing keeping me from using Linux 24/7, which uses 50MB of RAM (as opposed to Windows' 1.8GB) is the gaming support.

I'm just saying it isn't out of charity that they are doing this. Otherwise they would have done it a long time ago. tongue.gif
I was also answering the people who are wondering why THQ is bothering with a "small" market portion such as Linux.

If this works out well for THQ, then I hope we might see a flood of old games being converted to run on Linux as well, and not just Windows 95/98/XP to Windows Vista/7/8.

i don't see why it's so hard to port games over to openGL. they used to do it all the time back in the day.

You mean back in the day where games were longer than 4 hours long? Where 90% of the development time was spent developing a better game and not a draconic DRM system?

Yeah, and back when writing the story to the game was a larger priority than making the leaves on a tree look nice.

Though I don't think DRM takes up much of development time...there are entire companies that are dedicated to creating the stuff...I think most publishers will just buy it. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the the larger publishers have teams dedicated to it.
