Back in 08 I built a gaming rig for my little brother. I try to stay ahead and get him some gaming related gear whenever the oppertunity present itself. For xmas he's getting a Logitech G35 headset biggrin.gif

This is his current build:
  • 1.00 593892 ASUS M4A87TD/USB3, Socket-AM3 ATX, AMD870+SB850, DDR3, 1xPCIe(2.0)x16, SATA 6Gb/
  • 1.00 612850 HIS Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI, HDMI, 2xmini-DisplayPort,
  • 1.00 451753 CM Storm Scout Midi Tower Sort Fans: 1x 140mm Front, 1x 140mm Topp, 1x 120mm Ba
  • 1.00 451982 AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core, 3,2Ghz, AM3, 8MB, 125W, Boxed
  • 1.00 612436 Corsair CX 600W PSU ATX 12V V2.3, Standard. 2x 6+2pin PCIe, 6x SATA, 1
  • 1.00 618002 Corsair Vengeance? DDR3 1600MHz 6GB CL8 Kit w/3x 2GB XMS3 modules, CL8-8-8-24, 1.5V, Venge
  • 1.00 496258 Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB 7200RPM, SATA 3.0 Gbps, 3,5", 32MB Cache, 8.9ms

Apart from the obvius SSD upgrade, what single component could I get him to boost the preformance?

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the suggestion! How much of a bottleneck would the MB be? Would i get resonable preformance with it, or would it be substantially better(edit) wih a MB that supports PCI-e 3.0?
SOLID STATE DRIVE FIRST. No doubt about it. Next i'd do a processor upgrade if you're motherboard supports it. Otherwise i'd wait. New GPU's around the corner..

PCI-E 2.0 will not bottleneck a 660Ti. The 660Ti can't even take any use of PCI-E 3.0 unless it's in some sort of compute based application. Even then it'd get VERY little benefit.

EDIT: Looks like no BIOS support for Vishera FX Chips.

Which is why i said new vid card wink.gif If you were to get a new board, i would get a z77 with a cheap celeron chip to start.I rocked a g540 in my MVE til i got my 3770k. New AMD chips are a disappointment.... So back to the original idea...New Video Card! Can always move it to new setup down the road....thumb.gif
EDIT: Not hating on AMD, they've done well in the past....There's 5 computers in my house running AMD chips. biggrin.gif

SSD for the win. seriously, once you try it with your current hardware, you'll understand all the hype.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1179518/seans-ssd-buyers-guide-information-thread

btw, the Phenom II's are great proc's in my opinion, having owned a few generations of AMD chips, you should stick with the Phenom II until you save up for an intel build in a year or two. just my $0.02

Edit:
you really should try overclocking that Phenom II with a good cooler too! its a lot of fun actually. there is a whole slew of resources on this site for helping with overclocking. just do your research first and have fun. nothing like extra performance for almost nothing! you might even be able to get a decent OC on the stock cooler if you're lucky.

Sweet! I figured the SSD would be a shoeinn.
Thanks for the suggestions. Im gonna go for a modest SSD and probably a EVGA GeForce GTX 660Ti 3GB.
Hopefully he's responsible enough to handle an ssd, and not load it up with useless crap.

Gonna get working on the fundraising effort biggrin.gif

Thanks! I am a big fan of SSDs myself biggrin.gif I have been reluctant to get it for him in the past because of his age and noobishness (he wanted a new monitor with a decent "graphics card" lol). Figure he'll just fill it up with crap tongue.gif
I guess im gonna go for it. Hopefully he'll be able to use it somehow correctly.

This is a great suggestion! What cooler would you reccomend? I bet he'd love some kind of WC'ed setup! Maybe an H80?
Nothing would be better than maxing out his rig for a few more years! In a few years he'll have his confirmation and they ushally get into enough money for a sweet rig! Maybe I can spike an intresst so he will research and build it himself.

Thanks
