Formatting WD Advanced Format Drive in External Enclosure

Thread Starter
I have an external drive (WD Elements) containing a WD20EARX advanced format drive. What is the correct way to format it? All the info about formatting AF drives seems to be geared towards using them internally, and/or making them work with XP. I don't care about XP, but I do want it to work with BDPs and TVs (all support NTFS).

On WD's site I found info on using WD AF drives in third party enclosures - it said format that Windows 7 would format the drive correctly, as long as you did it as an internal drive(ie before installing in third party enclosure). But what about their drives in their enclosures?

Do I have to format with 4096 alignment? Does 4096 alignment work with MBR?

Windows 7 by default aligns partitions to 1MB boundaries. If you format it internally or externally, it'll do that. You only run into problems when enclosures adjust the alignment for you. Most do no such thing, but I imagine there may have been a few 'smart' enclosures released with that feature when advanced format drives were new, and when WinXP was more popular.

1MB not only takes care of 4KB alignment, but it also takes care of SSDs. (which sometimes perform best with 256/512/1024KB alignment - 1MB fits them all!
