Thread Starter
I ordered 2x WD 80gb IDE 2mb cache drives off woot.com for a total of $40

Im planning on running them in raid 0 and installing my games on them

IDE Raid is Dodgy at best in Most cases...Look here for RAID info :

Would it be worth it with the 2MB cache? I am assuming the SATA drive has a bigger cache and faster transfer speed than the IDE drives even if they were in RAID. Wouldn't the games load faster from the SATA drive?

All I know is SATA is good, and that RAID is better for it, and you can get like 16 MB cache on SATA drives... there's all the info I can give.

Yea they are not the best setup. I am running a RAID 0 Disk Striping with my SATA II drives to somehow compete with the 10k spindle speed drives. RAID 0 will combine 2 drives of the same size as one large partition. It will write half the data on one and the other half on the other. I think it's pretty nice as far as speed performance, but if one of the drives fails you're out of luck because you just lost everything.

At Newegg they have IDE hardware RAID controllers. Since most motherboards these days don't usually have IDE RAID, and if they do then they probably have SATA RAID which is so much more efficient anyway, i would buy a hardware controller. The bios settings can be tricky because you have to tell it to boot from the controller instead of it's onboard controller. If you would like to do this with those drives it would be fine, but the performance wouldn't be much increase, especially with the 2mb cache for each drive.

What i want to know is how come SATA II Drives are so cheap that it's usually cheaper than IDE and also better performing. Pricewatch.com is nice to check these prices out. I mean i see deals with IDE drives but they are after MIR but SATA II drives are cheap w/o rebate. I'm sporting 2 Hitachi SATA2 Drives that i got OEM for $50 each 1 year ago.

I ran IDE RAID 0 in my setup because I didn't feel like shelling out more money when I already had 2 160 GB HDDs lying around.

Most newer motherboards do in fact have an IDE RAID controller on-boards if they have 2 IDE ports. My Asus A8N-SLI Premium did. All you need to do is set it up like SATA. Make a RAID set-up disk and pop it in during setup. The setup was solid and I don't think it's any less stable than SATA but the speed is better than standard IDE. Also, you can only run a 2 disk setup but it seems that you are only doing 2 so you dont have to worry

The only thing you HAVE to do with IDE RAID is to have the 2 separate HDD on the Master slot, don't put one on Master and the other in Slave. You can connect the CD or DVD to Slave and it'll be fine but both HDD have to be on Master.

4 given is right on losing data. I lost a drive a few weeks back and lost everything. Kick in my a** for not backing up my data. Also with the 2mb cache you want see any difference not with IDE.I'm using a 2 mb cache HD right now and it's slow and like night and day to a 8Mb cache HD

Can't you run RAID 0+1 and have two identical drives in RAID 0 and then a third drive larger than the two smaller drives combined to backup all of the data on the RAID 0's???

Would this reduce performance at all?
