Testing memory stability (Prime95)

Thread Starter
I'm having some instability problems in my computer and would like to test whether or not my memory is causing me the problems. I am using Prime95 to test my memory stability and after 21 hours in, it failed because I got a BSOD. I want to make sure I was using the correct settings in Prime95.

When I open up Prime95, "Run A Torture Test" menu pops up and I selected "Blend (Test some of everything, lots of RAM tested). I have the torture test threads to run set at 4. Am I supposed to go higher? This is what I used for the 21 hour test until it failed. Is this is the correct test I am supposed to run for memory stability?

Can "Custom" test memory stability too? I tried to set "Memory to use (in MB)" set at 7500 because I have 8gb of ram, but it failed in less than a minute. Did I do this right?

To test memory, the Custom test that you did was the correct way. Since it BSOD/failed in less than a minute, good chance your RAM isn't stable.
Don't know much about AMD, but you might want to incrrease the memory volts to 1.67v (since they operate at 1.65v according to your link) or increasing the IMC (memory controller) volts just a bit and check.

I am sad... This is will be the second time I have to RMA it... First was from newegg and now I have to go through the RMA process with mushkin. Hopefully it is still under warranty because it has been a couple months already..

Can you answer my question about torture test threads to run. I seen some people have it higher than 4. I'm not really sure where I should have it at. AMD 955 Quad core.

Thanks

7500MiB is a lot to use out of 8GiB; I wouldn't go over 7000 to prevent paging.

Also, it's much more common for memory errors to be configuration issues than defective memory. Many people will RMA good products over and over again, not realizing their lack of knowledge/awareness is the issue.

You should try memtest, there is a USB bootable version if you have a USB drive and let it run for 3 runs with 1 stick at a time.
Yea setting the custom to 4 is right as you only have 4 cores.

Have you manually set your timings and voltages?

No, I have not manually set the timings or voltages; although when I first installed it, CPUID read different values for the timings and mhz. So I went into bios and luckily there was a profile that I selected to change to the factory clocked settings.
