Internal harddrive not recognized

Thread Starter
Hi, so I have a 1tb 5400 rpm internal laptop harddrive that stopped working. First windows would not start. After the "windows is starting" logo it would just be a black screen. So then I put the harddrive into another computer and booted with my ssd and I was able to see the files, so I thought all was good, and I would transfer the files I needed to a memory stick in the morning. My mom then put the harddrive into a metal cup, with the components face down touching metal... and the next morning the harddrive is not shown in my computer or disk managment.

If I try to boot my ssd with the 1tb harddrive in the second slot, my ssd wont boot. The ssd boots fine alone or with any of my other hardrives in the second slot. But when I add the 1tb harddrive the boot is first suuper slow, and eventually gets to windows i starting and is stuck ther for good.. Is the harddrive completely dead?

Sounds like it's dead.

I've heard rumors that sometimes putting a failing hard drive in the freezer will get it to start up again for a little bit,....but this I'm pretty sure this is nothing more than a crazy rumor.

If you need the data off that hard drive, there are companies that will dissemble the drive in a clean room and put the platters on a new working hard drive for a few hundred dollars.

Other than that, your out of luck.

A lot of times you can ship the failed hard drive back to the manufacturer for a new one.

The freezer trick is not rumor. I have gotten it to work...unfortunately it is not a very often it actually works. I mainly use that trick for getting information off the drive because that's usually all the time you will get out of it, if it works in the first place.

Also a white room is much more expensive then a few hundred dollars. More like a few thousand dollars. It all depends on the size, drive corruption, and how deep they need to dig to get the fills you want (sure there is more I just don't personally do that kind of work).

Heh, I've done the freezer trick a couple times successfully...but it is for cases where the HDD is still a little alive. I just did it last week. I had a hard drive that would spin up, but soon become unresponsive. I was trying to recover data off of it...about 8GB of pictures for some one. It would start copying and make to about 20% and then die. I put in the freezer over night...it was then able to make it to 80% before dieing. So with a few attempts I was able to recover much more...some of the picture files were corrupted and unusable though, but I was able to save most things for them.

I put the harddrive in the freezer, my sister had all her stuff for her exams in there so she needs it pretty quick. Leave it for 2 hours is enough? Cant leave it over night because first exam is tomorrow for her.

Shouldn't sata be hot swappable? Have you tried plugging it in with the computer (the one with the ssd) already on?

It does sound like it is a candidate for a freezer fix...you could try it...but I'd leave it in there as long as you possibly can. It might be a one shot deal...though no hard drive I've ever put in the freezer came out of the freezer in any worse shape than when it went in, but I can see reasons why it might not.

Yes, at first it worked and I was able to see the files. But after my mom put it on metal cup, when I plug the drive in I cant open disk managment and "my computer" freezes.

Sounds like the same symptoms as when someone brought a dying drive to me - it had about 14000 reallocated sectors. You kinda lucked out when it started up properly and you could view files... most people don't get that chance. redface.gif

I highly doubt it's because it was put on a metal cup. It was degrading fast... opportunity missed, but maybe the freezer trick will do it. Good luck. thumb.gif

Ok so I put the HDD in the freezer for 12h in an AS bag and connected it to my laptop in the second slot and at first nothing happened, but after 20 minutes the files showed up and I was able to save 90% of the files my sister needed. The other 10% was gone from the drive so I guess they were deleted or corrupt. But most were saved so it is awesome. biggrin.gif Thanks for suggesting the freezer thing Crimson.
