Biostar 6100-939 NB-SB multi settings

Thread Starter
After being stuck at 296 @ 9x overclock, I read that the NB<-->SB should be at 3x rather than 4x that is the default. After changing this, I am up to 320 @9x. My question is this: Does changing to 3x on the NB<-->SB offset the gains I get in clock speed?

I added a NB fan and switch over to a Hyper48 cooler that I lapped, which has helped my temps. Currently 41 C (cpu) & 51C (core) running double prime. Idle temps are about 27C for CPU. This is all at 1.5 vcore, which is what I need to get double prime stable.

I always read that CPU temp should be below 50 C. What temp should I watch for the core temp? (yes I am shooting for 3 GHZ on this cooling).

Unsure on the effects, curious to the answer and whether any benchmark testing will reviel this.
I have the same MB/CPU (different stepping) to set up shortly for folding and want answers too NICE OCing BTW

The Duke,

As soon as I dropped the multi, it was clear that the chipset was having issues with the increased bus speed. I got the info on dropping the multi at rebles haven, so it is at least a source that is interested in the mobo. What benchmark would be a good test of overall performance? I think I will drop back to my stable 4x NB<->SB clock and check the performance at 4x and 3x.

No doubt, I will wish for a 3.5 setting when I am through.

Here is what I did....

Dropped my FSB to 290, where I knew I was stable at both 4x and 3x for NB->SB and NB<-SB. 1M and 2M super Pi were exactly the same, as were the Prime95 results. I also ran 3DMark and the scores were within 2 point. So my quick and dirty findings are dropping the NB->SB/NB<-SB multi from 4x to 3x does not impact performance. However, I was able to gain 8% on my max (stable) FSB.

I'v not used this benchmark in a long time, now you have me wondering about this whole thing. Time will tell, I have a build to do tommrow and once that is out the way, I'm on the 6100

The performance benefits would be minimal, but I'd pick the higher FSB over a high HTT any day.

so I ran PassMark to see what changing the NB/SB multi from 4x to 3x would cause. For me, the increased stability and gain in FSB speed point to dropping to a 3x NB-->SB/NB<--SB. I just do not see any big losses. (See summary below)

MEMORY Mark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 482.2
MEMORY Mark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 441.6
MEMORY Mark (290 FSB, 4X NB/SB): 448.3

DISK Mark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 313.4
DISK Mark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 317.3
DISK Mark (290 FSB, 4X NB/SB): 319.7

CD Mark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 345.7
CD Mark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 348.0
CD Mark (290 FSB, 4X NB/SB): 344.0

3D Mark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 184.7
3D Mark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 189.6
3D Mark (290 FSB, 4X NB/SB): 191.2

2D Mark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 642.3
2D Mark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 597.3
2D Mark (290 FSB, 4X NB/SB): 591.2

PassMark (320 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 602.8
PassMark (290 FSB, 3X NB/SB): 559.9

Memory mark: a +
Disk: a draw
CD Mark: a draw
3D Mark: Slight drop
2d Mark: ++
Pass Mark: ++

Other than the 3d Mark slight hit it appears to have more benifits @ 3x

The one thing I want to check this evening is my PCIe clock speed. It is currently at 105 based on earlier checks I did at 290. From 100 to 105 I saw improvement in my 3DMark scores. I will do this again and see if the sweet spot shifted at the new higher FSB. Perhaps I that tweak will take care of the slight drop there.
