Conroe Build for early next year 2000CAD

Thread Starter
Ok so for my build for early nect year i've decided to go conroe instead of X2.
I know it might seem a little early but i want to have everything planned out when i'm ready to buy as to avoid as many mistakes and whatnot possible ( first build )
Depending on how much my godmother and my family spoil me this xmas (only child, and no cousins or anything..) and if i have to withdraw $950 from a savings account i have or not, i'm hopeing on having a final budget of 2000CAD (about 1750USD, not a penny more)

What i'm thinking of right now is:
E6600 Conroe
(Not sure which mobo as i dont know intel that much..)
Either some G.Skill or Team Xtreem ram (2 x 1GB) (about 320CAD limit on ram, PC6400 if it can fit in ram budget)
Either a Seagate 7200.10 or a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 (320/300 GB respectively)
Nice vid card which will last awhile as i wont be upgrading for DX10 (i dont have a job yet, and i dont get that much money anyways, only on xmas/bday really..)
Armor JR. Case
Not sure for PSU
DVD-ROM/Writer/Burner combo (not some 200$ plextor thing)
if it can fit, a X-fi card
and some speakers (again, not some overly expensive stuff)

I'm going to use the keyboard and mouse i have on this comp. (i'm just gonna put my old wireless keyboard/mouse combo back on it)
And i'm going to take my 19''WS from this comp (gonna put my old 17'' DELL CRT back on it)

I'm open to suggestions, but if you make a build list, DONT LINK NEWEGG
www.directcanada.com, www.tigerdirect.ca, www.ncix.com, www.canadacomputers.com are fine/good.

Thanks for your help ^_^

REMEMBER THIS IS FOR EARLY NEXT YEAR (JAN~FEB 2007)

Well , i sugest one of the new i680 mobo's for this build.
An X-FI extremeGamer is a cheap and good soundcard, if you wanna go X-Fi;it's a "bulk" version of the xtreme music i think.
For a GPU, i would suggest a 7900GS, or Gt.
And do not get a maxtor , ok?
Those hdd's die alot!

well the ArmorJR i can get at a canadacomputers close to here for less. and it would be easyer if i have to take it back so you can leave that out of everything
oh and E6600 has to be retail as i wont be getting and custom cooling right away. (CPU + HSF)

I would try for a quad-core...They can't be beat and you'll see a price drop by early next year. If the price is very right, I might get a QX6600.

Hmm.. I'd say for a GPU you could go with a cheap X1950Pro. They perform pretty well, outperforming 7900GSes in some cases. Or, if you're looking to spend more money on a graphics card, an X1950XT or a 7900GT

I have the 680i evga board and I am ready to jam it into an evga employees forehead right now. Not recommended especially if you are going to run a single gfx cards. Way too many issues with it when you overclock with (ie sata corruption, ps2 ports stop working, sound doesn't work properly etc.) and so far the solutions I have been getting from various people at the evga forum are - buy a sata raid card, buy a new keyboard or just don't overclock cause thats bad. A 965 chipset board would probably better. I do however like my team group ram and it sells for about $321 CAD and directcanada for the pc6400 stuff. My seagate hd I am also very happy with, nice and quick and makes almost no noise. You might be able to squeeze in a 8800gts in your budget, if not the 1950pro is probably the best gfx for your buck in Canada right now.

Thanks for the info on the 680i i'll look into that.
What other board(s) do you recommend other than the 680i?

I looked what it would come up to with a 8800GTX and it was 200 over-budget
so i'll probably end up getting a 8800GTS

I'm not looking at prices right now, but I'd suggest

E6400 (The 2MB extra cache doesn't help much when overclocked. I guess you could go with the E6600 if you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff.)
P5B Deluxe (The 680i chipset isn't too good unless you want to go SLI but SLI is normally bad because 1 next gen card usually beats 2 top of the line cards from the previous gen.)
Team Extreme 2GB (Just get the cheapest D9 cause when overclocked they are exactly or close to the same)
Perp Drives Raid (2 Drive or 4 drive raid 0)
Nvidia(eVGA 7900GT or 7950GT and then step up after the 8900s come out because DX9 card work fine now and when DX10 comes out the 8900 will most likely be the same price as the 8800s now.)
GameXStream or PC and Power (The GameXStream and cheaper per watt, but the PC and Power power supplies have single rails which is better but not really necessary)

My build suggested is probably less than 2k so I'd advise you to save the money and upgrade when new tech comes out. Its not use spending all your cash now and then 3 months later the new stuff comes out that totaly owns your old hardware. I mean look at the Conroe release it totally owned K8 and Netburst.
