[HP Envy] New laptop an HP Envy Sleekbook 6 with an AMD A-4555M

Thread Starter
I picked up a new laptop this weekend for use when I'm Traveling. It is the HP Envy Sleekbook 6 with 64bit Windows 8. I'm learning to get around in it and finding out how to do the things in windows 8 that I'm used to doing in Windows 7. The screen is 15.6" and very nice at 1366x768. It is LED back lit and has a very nice visible range. The lid includes a user facing HP TrueVision HD camera. The back lid and typing surface is covered with a black brushed aluminum base.

The processor is the low power 1.6 ghz AMD APU A8-4555M which so far is very speedy. I have played WoW, Torchlight II and Diablo on it already and at resolution is more than adequate. It came with one stick of 4 gigs of DDR3 1600. I loaded 2 sticks of 8 gig Corsair DDR3 1600 to it to get the system specs up.

It has a 320 gig SATA hard drive that is just OK. The mounting bracket is for a 7mm hard drive so the SSD drives i have did not fit but I found that all of the Samsung 840 series are 7mm. I'm planning on watching the deals to find at least a 250 GIG SSD that is 7mm height to put in it.

Here is the cooler they used. Well this picture did not come out well will try to get a better.

I will keep everyone up to date with experiance with it as i use it.

LoL first time I travel I leave my power brick at home.

Congrats! I am/was shopping for a A8 Trinity for a reasonable price. I found a few but wanted this one from Targ'et that was $350.99 (normally $529) for BF/CM. Its back on discount but slightly higher ($379.99) but using the Red Card I get 5% off, it comes close to the old price, under budget as well.

Will start my own thread but just thought I would say Congrats again...

I got an HP Envy 15 not too long ago! The i7 2670QM/7690M 15.6" and 1920x1080 model, however. I love it. Wish the GPU had a bit more kick behind it but for the price I paid I'm very satisfied.

If you notice some weird issues like the color red appearing slightly orange or volume "swinging" (getting loud then quiet randomly), let me know. They're fairly common (on the non-sleekbook model) and I can help you fix them.

So i started a thread on the HP website to request support to be able to manually increase the used memory size to take advantage of more ram.

Here is the thread if you want to see it.

Ok so I went to put my Agility 4 125 gig ssd drive into this laptop. I kept getting boot error 3f0 install an OS but could not initially get it to let me put anything on it. I finnally found my way around and was able to do it. Here is what I did.

Ok I managed to get this done on my laptop. I have the HP envy sleekbook 6. It came with windows 8 preinstalled. In installed a 125 gig Agility 4. Here is how I did it.

1 - Make the hp recovery disks. In my case it took 6 DVD's
2 - Shut the laptop down and turn it off.
3 - Replace the laptop hard drive with the SSD you wish to use.
4 - Power the HP laptop on and hit esc key to start the boot menu.
5 - Hit F10 to enter the bios.
6 - Change the wait time to something manageable like 10 seconds.
7 - Disable secure boot
8 - Make the rom drive bootable and your primary boot device.
9 - Hit F10 to save and reboot
10 - Hit escape and boot to your Recovery disks.
11 - Select recover with minimal install. This will install Windows 8 and the HP recovery partition. Windows 8 took a little over 30 gigs in my case and the recovery partition is about 25 gigs.
12 - At the final reboot hit esc and then F10 to enter the Bios.
13 - Change the wait time out back to 0
14 - Change the primary boot device order back to your desires suggested would be the OS
15 - (Enable Safe Boot if you want)
16 - Let the windoww8 boot and complete the setup.
17 - Celebrate with a Dr. Pepper.
