Gigabyte X79-UP4

Sin did a review of this board.

I have to say the colour scheme is fantastic.

The price is $250ish at most places.

Those are also Heatsinks, not just for show. And you can remove them if you want.

UP5 has throttling problems. You don't hear Gigabyte recommended for LGA2011 because they have problems. Asus seems pretty much the only safe bet.

This is a firmware problem happening ONLY with the X79S-UP5 with is a server board with C606 chipset (for Xeons originally). Not like regular X79 boards. Asus WS boards for example don't have C606.
And the problem has been fixed through a BIOS update already for ES C0 CPUs, fix for others are in the works.

On the other hand, the P9X79 Deluxe has a really high return rate.

Does that mean that Asus isn't recommended for 2011? I guess not.

Anyway, the X79-UP4 seems like win to me with its brillant IR power delivery and all the Gigabyte goodies!

I am not sure whether UP4 has throttling problems, and if generally OCs well

Based on this review, it could be better unless you can persuade me otherwise.

According to Gigabyte UP5 works well with ES chips, but does it matter? What matters when there is going to be a fix for consumer chips. If there is no fix, it is a bad choice for one who is planning to overclock. These guys spent weeks trying to get Gigabyte acknowledge the issue, but it is still useless. Did Gigabyte ever fix Z68 issues? Some boards got UEFI, some didn't

I really don't want somebody to buy a product that doesn't work at the moment of purchase because one can't trust these giant corporations to fix it.

When I said Asus, I meant them in general. I am not familiar which of their LGA2011 boards work, and which don't. RIVE is a popular choice over here. It is also the most expensive, but it is the best LGA2011 board without doubts.

VRM isn't everything if software or design doesn't allow use of it by throttling the performance down. UP5 has better VRM than RIVE but it performs worse, and UP4 has about the equivalent VRM to RIVE, but why they perform worse?

Also, we have to consider prices. Are there better boards than UP4/UP5 for the same price overclocking wise? I don't know since I am not familiar with LGA2011 choices, but I would like to think so.

From what I hear, MSI did a better job than Gigabyte did for LGA2011.

The Rampage Formula is good too and its a regular ATX board not E-ATX so it will fit in most cases.

Sorry, I can't really say what gets the second place. With Z77 all boards are good and stable. I don't really know any bad performers, so we can just compare VRM components, and features and get the best. With X79 besides VRM we have to check reliability factor first. Closest to RIVE on Asus lineup is P9X79 Deluxe, but as adridu59 mentioned it has its own problems. MSI Big Bang XPower II seems nice. It also has a better VRM that RIVE on paper. How does it perform? I am not sure.

Best thing to do is to go over X79 threads, and ask questions about how those boards perform, or just wait some owners feedback in this thread thumb.gif.
