Do you know what revision of the board you got? like 5.x, 4.0, 3.1, have you updated your bios yet? Im assuming you got the board from microcenter, on the side of the mobo box there should be a sticker that says either 3, 4, or 5 rev.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4125#utility If your board isnt a 5.x rev then just click on the 3.1./4.0 which ever corresponds to your mobo. Input your operating system and download @bios and go and select bios through the dropdown and get the latest version. No idea if you've done this but you said you're new so I'd guess so (im new to this too smile.gif 1.45 voltage just to get 4ghz is too high, generally that's what people use to get like 4.5, since our mobos are cheapish/oldish we're having a hard ass time but im on 4ghz right now, ran prime95 which is a cpu stress test for 5 minutes and i didnt bsod so i guess this works. Ima go into my bios and will give you the specific settings that I've got.

that board isnt really good for over clocking considering it has a 4 power phases? if im not mistaken. you should get the 990FXA that board doesnt have any vrm heatsinks D: youre going to need a better baord to hit 4Ghz

ummm, why are u increasing voltage, even if u had a very good aftermarket fan it would get hot, your killing your cpu, thats why cores are shutting down. Do yourself a favor, read, read and read more on overclocking, all your doing is stressing your system and you dont even know what your doing....and get yourself a fan, also a good power supply is a must and im afraid to ask what mother board your using.....

The reason your cores are failing is due to not enough voltage. The easiest way I have found to find the ballpark voltage is set you multiplier, set voltage to auto, run prime to stress test and download cpu-z to see what voltage your cpu is requiring. One you find out this voltage, you can always lower if need be, but in my experience it is usually close enough to the lowest stable voltage that I leave it on auto anyways, Just make sure you keep your temps in check.

As long as your temps are in check you will be fine. Cores failing in prime 95 is a typical response to lack of voltage. Usually, in my experience, this happens when the voltage is not so off that it is causing a blue screen, but just causing the cores to fail the stress test. 4.0 ghz is a pretty mild overclock for this chip, so setting this to auto you should be fine to get a ballpark figure, as I stated before. If your temps are too high, lower you oc, or invest in a new cooler, but I believe you will be fine with this mild oc. Good luck thumb.gif

Upping voltage isn't always the answer esp if it's already failing Prime 95 with a stock cooler but if temps are OK, you should be fine but be sure temps are OK under load.

Get your cooling sorted out first, if it can't handle the heat, don't expect it to stay in the kitchen for long because it won't. Also know with these new chips, it's way easy to give them too much voltage, at least more than they'd need.

For hitting 4.0 with that chip, 1.45v's shoudn't be required but I will also say each chip is different so it's not realistic to say one voltage setting fits all, you'll have to find the right balance of voltage, temps and stability.
As an example, I can say my 4300 truly doesn't need 1.45v's to hit 4.5 and although I haven't tested it yet, I'd bet it could run at 4.0 with the shown voltage used and have 100% stability all day long.
As for cooling, you can bet it ain't stock, redface.gif running a Thermaltake V1 right now and it's doing fine.
