CrossFire/SLI or Single - Page 2

Thread Starter
My rig is already pushing $2800 for now with 2GB of ram, an E6300, and one ATi R600. So, if I wanted to get 4GB of Ram, Raid 0 Raptors, or a second GPU I'd need to wait till next year anyway. Thanks for all your help guys.~

Good luck with your build. I'm looking forward to the R600's as well.

I think you should go that route too. I get 40 fps easily playing F.E.A.R. at maximum settings and as close to 1680x1050 (which is widescreen FTW). It can drop a bit if a lot of stuff is going on at a time, but it will always be near 40 and I get very little lag when it does drop (it's hardly noticeable and doesn't affect my game play).

If you go with RAID now, you get better load up times, as I'm sure you're aware since you are using it on your current rig. You can get 2-150GB WD Raptors to run in RAID for $450. Also, I would go with the Tuniq Tower 120 or the Zalman 9700 instead of the Big Typhoon, as both are shown to cool better. You will be hard-pressed to find the TT120, though.

I don't see how it will be any different when DX10 games and cards come out full-fledged. So get 1 card and spend the rest on a RAID setup.
I'm in the exact same boat. Personally, if you are looking to buy something now, then go with the x1950xt or the x1900xtx. The x1900xtx gets the same framerates (within 5 or so) on resolutions of 1280x1024 and below. Once you start hitting 1600x1200, things lean towards the dual-gpus. I say wait for the r600 because with that extra research time, I would expect ATI to come out with something that has truely never been seen before. x1900xtx has a pretty nice price right now, though...

1280x1024 and below a single card is really all that one needs. Even higher res' a single x1900xtx performs very well. I play BF2142 with no problem at 19xxX1440 or whatever it is and have no noticable framerate problems. Wow at 2560x1600 Im pulling around 25fps at minimum with just a single card. Usually Im right around 40+ during normal game play. BF2 I would assume the same as BF2142. Haven't tested CS:S yet. But I have my settings maxed on all the games.

I don't know if you solidified your upcoming build specs, but an E6400 over that E6300 would be well worth the extra $40.
As for the Graphics cards, I say get one now, and purchase another for CF/SLI later.
