Question concerning Filco key caps

Thread Starter
I'm looking to replace my stock ESC and WASD key caps with colored ones. Would non Filco key caps (ie - key caps found on elitekeyboards.com, ebay, etc.,) provide the same feeling (or have the same texture) as Filco key caps?

Thanks!

There's a few different type's of caps. What ones are you looking at?
WASDKeyboards have full sets for replacement at the same feel -ABS plastic at OEM profiles. I'd drop ABS though unless you were short on cash for thick PBT keycaps. I find that OEM ABS with O-rings have a similar travel distance when compared to PBT.

I've replaced my Filco keycaps with ones from WASDkeyboards today actually, and the feel is very similar, but depending on what method were used to create and 'decorate' the keycap the feel may be different e.g. you may notice differences between ABS, PBT, doubleshot, engraved, laser etched etc.

An example of this is how PBT keys won't get a 'shine' to them as quickly, i.e. the matte finish won't be worn down by the oils in your fingers leaving a shiny top on the keycap as quickly.

I'm a n00b when it comes to keyboards. I just want key caps that feel closely to the original Filco ones. The Keyboard Co UK has some Filco key caps for sale on their website but shipping to the US is pretty expensive. Elite keyboards has some keycaps but I'm not sure if they're closely similar to the original Filco ones. Same goes for these eBay ones. Are the original Filco key caps laser etched? What's the difference between ABS and PT? Thanks!

Here is a picture I took with a stock Filco keycap on the left and a WASDkeyboards key on the right (both R4 profile)

As you can see the keycaps are very similar. tongue.gif

From what I know PBT is a more durable plastic than ABS so it won't be worn as quickly as ABS.

Thanks for the picture!

So the general consensus is that WASDKeyboards key caps are pretty reliable?

All the reports I've heard so far indicate so. smile.gif

Also I don't see you on my list as being a member of OCN's Mechanical Keyboard club. eek.gif

Yeah I've just been too lazy to apply. tongue.gif I currently own a SteelSeries 7G and a Filco Majestouch 2 104 Red.

Also as far as the key pullers go, would you guys also recommend a WASDKeyboards one or are all of them pretty much universal?

Thanks again for the all help everyone!
