mSATA SSD on Desktop

Thread Starter
I'm in the process of getting together the best build for my money. I've had a look at the GA-Z77X-UP7 motherboard and noticed it supports mSATA. I'm planning on buying a small SSD for the OS only (no personal files/installed programs).

Is it worth the extra cost and will I see a difference in booting speed/OS operation using a mSATA SSD over a standard HDD? And should I bother with mSATA SSD?

Going from a HDD to any SSD is a huge improvement.

From my knowledge, SATA and MSATA offer around the same performance. If one is a smidgeon faster, it is negligible.

I wouldn't but a mobo just because of MSATA. Most motherboards these days have plenty of SATA ports.

That motherboard feature is extremely nice if you are building a build that's as small as possible, since the MSATA SSD does not take up any space plugged in there. Otherwise I agree, no reason not to just use a regular SSD... unless you can find a MSATA one for super cheap.

just know that the msata protocal at the moment is only sata II so read/write are limited to 280/270. I had a Crucial 256gb msata that I landed on an OWC carrier card that would allow reads of close to 400 and was drive limited to 265 on writes. not a ton of real world difference from sata III drives other than max numbers

How rude, I forgot to respond. Thanks for the comments. I'm just going to go with a SATA III SSD then smile.gif

Hmm I wasppretty sure that Mushkin offers a 256GB SATA6Gbps mSATA SSD?

Either way, the GA-Z77X-UP7 is a phenomenal board and I would have a hard time deciding between itandthe Maximus 5 Extreme. The huge number of VRMs, while overkill for all but a few in terms of provided power, do run very cool.
