Importance of Ram timings in OCing

Hello everyone, I was wondering what the importance of ram timings were in terms of overclocking. For example, the Mushkin ram I use to have had timings that were 7-8-7-20. I'm now looking at the G.skill ripjaws z which has a timing of 10-12-12-31. I usually don't OC my ram much, I only play with it to help stabilize my overall OC in terms of my CPU. I don't know much about the important of timings when it comes to ram, can anyone give me some info? Thanks!

lower timings are often referred to as 'tighter' timings and higher ones are referred to as 'looser' timings. In terms of real world performance, there's not really much to be gained. In most cases, only a benchmark will show the difference.

System stability is usually harder to achieve with tighter timings.

Depends on your platform.

More cpu voltage is needed for tighter timing, higher frequency ram compared to slower ram. Obviously more IMC voltage too. But I find it interesting that you need more cpu vcore to make things happen stable wise.

Yeah, this is an oft overlooked consequence of playing with memory.

Feeding the CPU information faster lets it do more and wait less, implying greater current draw, plus potentially leading to an increase in voltage to maintain stability.
