When I put the system together I had no issue with sound as I was using sound via HDMI out of the HD5870 video card, but when he got it home, his old ass stereo uses 1/8" and he had the same problem as you. The icon looks like it is playing, the bar moves across, but there is no sound. We tried installing the Realtek 2.69 drivers with windows 8 support, but the problem persists. XFX have become an epic pile of **** on their support side in the last 18 months (never buying their gear again) and have all but abandoned support for all of their legacy hardware. You might need to chock this up to incompatibility.
Further note, if you buy a new Nvidia card series around GTX 680 or later, you will need to keep an ATI video card in PCIe slot 2, otherwise it won't work. Don't ask me why...but all I can say is **** XFX.
I will let you know what happens, he's going to see if he can hook it up another way, either via the optical out, or via some other way.

thumb.gif cheers for that great help. Glad i didn't buy a 680 the other week ha.
Maybe its time to get a new motherboard then.
Im looking at ordering an asus xonar for now as i know they do work with windows 8.

To me it seems like sound card drivers cause more issues than just about anything.

No it was pretty much the same as it is now, i have tried uninstalling them.

The only solution for sound problems in windows 8 is:
uninstall any new version of your audio driver & install your audio device like realtek with its own original cd that comes with motherboard pack.
then enable all kind of sounds in:
control panel--->sound--->speakers
first set "speakers" as default device then click on properties for speakers.
in "speakers properties" click on "levels" and enable all listed items like "cd audio", "line in",...
make sure you linked the speaker cable in green hole at back of your onboard sound card.thumb.gif
