Just go in game and take a look at shadows from trees and other objects in DX11 and DX9 and you'll notice immediately that shadows are completely sharp and unnatural looking in DX9 when compared to DX11.

DX11 has more natural looking shadows (soft shadows) slightly better lighting, better AO, and better water reflections. Those are the main differences. If you're not looking for these things, then chances are you won't see a difference between the modes, but they are definitely there and noticeable if you look.

The shadows in DX 9 and 11 look exactly the same.

I think I am understanding what the problem is.

If you set the game to custom and change form DX11 to DX9... then basically, HDAO is not being turned off. In DX9 deferred lighting does not allow the use of AA. So that's the only main difference.

Now back to having HDAO running in DX11. I believe that if you put a preset on and switch from DX11 to DX9, then it changes HDAO. But while you're in custom, it doesn't touch those settings. Sort of how we can turn off PostFX ONLY while in custom mode.

BUT, it does seem that the DX11 HDAO is of better quality, but it might simply be due to the lighting technique used in DX9 as opposed to DX11.

Quick question to those doing the comparison shots... are you quitting the game and reloading? Just cause it won't take effect until you start the game up again.

Here's some pics for comparison.

Right click and open in a new tab.
In the following order:
First DX11 no AO, Second pic: DX9, AO=5 in GamerProfile, Third pic: DX9, AO=6 in GamerProfile, Fourth pic: DX11, AO=HDAO (6 in GamerProfile)

Shots borrowed from Neogaf.

To me the shadows look a bit softer in DX11. However, is it worth 20% more GPU power for that? Probably not. Could have at least did something pretty with the dirt like the Crysis 2 DX11 addon did.

Yes, Quitting and reloading It says you have too.
Thank you for uploading highly appreciated.
All in really see is an increase in light, and that might be due to the in game climate and weather.

The first shot doesn't use AO at all... so that's why the other shots are brighter. The only difference between the two... is how much softer the shadows are in DX11. It's mostly noticeable indoors, because outside climate makes lighting slightly different.

Can you show the difference when looking at water for us! Under water too.

After seeing the screenshots. I'm really convinced.

This whole friggin game has taken us for a ride from start to finish.

- Astonishingly bad UI (& the "fix" doesn't fix the worst elements)

- Almost no replay-ability in free-roam mode (cuz no enemy respawns! brilliant!)

- Must connect to servers in SP mode (every time you access the options menu, no less)

- QTE's, console controls, incomplete keybindings options.

Etc. Ad Infinitum.
