Best Motherboard for Overclocking a FX 8350?

Thread Starter
Hey all Im currently running a Asus M5A97 Rev 1.0 and I am able to overclock to 4.6Ghz with 1.45V but cannot push any further due to 4.7Ghz seeming to not be stable at 1.55V or under, my temps are fine. Im guessing this is due to my board not having the good power phases needed for the 8350 (I know nothing about power phases). I was looking at possibly getting another board if it will help me achieve a higher overclock at lower volts. Any recommendations? I was looking into the Asus Sabertooth rev 2.0 but some of the reviews on Newegg have made me second guess that choice, apparently it is an RMA nightmare with those boards and they are unreliable?

Thanks for the feedback thumb.gif

In my personal experience, the best boards for overclocking are the ROG ones. The crosshair V would be my choice, but I do own a sabertooth 2.0 and it's been a very good board to me. It's just a tad ugly.

TBH Im a big fan of how the Sabertooth looks. I also like the looks of the Gigabyte board mentioned.

I owned a UD5 and it was bloody terrible. I'm not sure if they have fixed the issue, but the vdrop was HUGE with no option to adjust LLC. Very annoying for overclocking when you set 1.55 in bios and get like 1.48v under load.

Anyone else have experience with the Sabertooth or any other board that I could possibly overclock higher on? Will I even overclock higher switching from my M5A97 rev 1.0? Everyone keeps saying my power phases arent up to par but I dont know anything about them. Im under the assumption that getting a board better suited for my FX 8350 I will be able to overclock it with a bit less voltage than I am currently.

Max OC on my board limited only by voltages is 4.6Ghz @ 1.35V with LLC bringing it to 1.47V under load. A 4.7Ghz overclock is not achievable without going over 1.55V.

If you want the best you should be thinking Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z.
You WILL see/feel the difference.

The CHV or CHV-Z are great boards. The Sabertooth is just as solid minus a few overclocking utilities like ROG connect. Any of those should net you a slightly higher overclock. They provide more control on voltages over the M5A97 you have. Another one to look at is the M5A99FX Rev 2.0. I just picked one up the other day. Took the 8120 out of my sig rig and put in it. Super easy to get it to 4.5. Put a 8320 in the CHV in my sig and got to 4.6 without even thinking about it. The Gigabyte UD-3-5-7 are also decent but I just prefer Asus.

The CHV or CHV-Z, the Sabertooth, either revision or the Gigabyte UD3, UD5 or UD7 (get Rev 1.1 or higher for LLC) and you will be very happy. Between all of them it depends on what your needs are, the UD7 has the most PCIe slots for doing Quad SLI/CF, the Sabertooth comes with a 5 year warranty and the CHV series are easy to use. Personally if I was getting a CHV I would get the new "Z" model which adds debug LED, higher Ram clocks and overall better design compared to the original CHV. I just switched from the Sabertooth Rev 1.0 to the UD7 and I can overclock higher and easier on it, plus I needed more PCIe slots. If you are planning on water cooling, go with the CHV series or the UD7 since they make full cover water blocks for them.

Merry Christmas all since I wont be around much the next while. Ive decided to go with the Asus Sabertooth rev 2.0 to replace my M5A97 rev 1.0 board. Hopefully Ill be able to pull off a higher OC on my FX 8350 with the good power phase and digi power stuff. Decision was mostly based the fact the Gigabyte boards are ugly as sin and I have always had a good experience with any and all Asus products.
