Do these 1.25gb cards have enough vram to run BF3 on maximum settings? I have a single gtx 570 now and was thinking going SLI would enable me to run BF3 at max settings (I have 23" 1920x1080 120hz monitor). But everyone on OCN says BF3 runs out of VRAM on gtx 570, so going sli wont make a difference will it if the total amount of vram isnt doubled if i went sli?
As a quick test try running BF3 on max settings with your one card, and monitor your vram usage using Precision or the sort. If it maxes, then it wont be much use getting another. If there is headroom, get another. Test it out!
Edit: and yes, getting another card doesn't double your vram. Another card will certainly help to run on higher settings, but maybe with MXAA tuned down a little bit.
If you do plan on using MSAAx4, you will most likely hit vram wall in most maps.
However, you could just disable Windows Aero while gaming and lower it to MSAAx2 and I doubt you'll get anywhere close to 1.2GB, not to mention the quality differentece between Textures on High or Ultra is NONE, so you can just lower textures to High and free up some more vram (Game needs a restart for this to apply).
I had sli evga gtx 570's u will hit a vram issue.
I used to get it all the time. Fps drops down to 30fps.
They have the power but u wnt be able to play with everything on ultra.
U need to turn msaa down and textures down. I wud just upgrade to a 670 / 7950 will cost the same if u can sell ur 570
i have tested Xfiring my 1gb 5850 and i just set my settings to "Auto". its a mixture of ultra and high without 4x MSAA. high settings is just as good as ultra. and Anti-Aliasing POST set to high looks good already. so i would just turn off the Anti-Aliasing Deferred.
and even my GPU usage exceeds 1gb, i don't experience any slow down or stutter. min 50fps, max 110fps, average 60fps

1.25GB is BARELY enough for ultra textures. In fact, I use exactly 1200MB-1280MB of my vram with 2xMSAA. So it is possible. 4xMSAA isn't possible though. The only caveat of the 570 is the 320-bit bus which dictates 1.28GB of memory. If they did 384, it could be 1.5GB, if they did 256, it could be 2GB. Now Nvidia uses mixed densities to achieve target vram capacity. I would recommend selling your 570 and going with a 7950, 7970, or 670. Even a 660Ti would be OK, but nowadays you can find 670's for $50 more than 660Tis.
just for my knowledge, does 1.5 gig of vram make a big difference over 1.25 gig? as my 2 GTX 580's run BF3 very well on maxed out settings, I don't monitor fps as I really don't care as long as my games run smooth.
buy a GTX 670 4 gig vram card (EVGA) thats my plan I want 2 of them too replace my 2 GTX 580's the 670 4 gig version is a nice card and the cost is very good for what your getting IMO
also buy the non overclocked version as it's more stable and you can overclock it yourself, i myself don't like the way the cards are overclocked from the manufacturer
If he plays at 1080p/1200p 2GB is more than enough, I'd get a GTX670 2GB which is VERY close to 2x GTX570 (And a lot more power efficient) and that will provide more than enough to max out pretty much any game with at least MSAAx4.
Heck, I have 2x GTX680 2GB and I play at 2560x1440, and I can max out Battlefield 3 including MSAAx4 if I disable Windows Aero, but MSAA is useless at this resolution, so I use AA Post (FXAA) on Medium which takes no performance hit and no vram space.
my thought with the 4 gig vram version is you can tell all your friends that you have more vram then they do.
I know I'm 52 but I still like too have better toy's then my friends.
but yes a 2 gig version would work just fine, as for AMD I have no opinion as I have never owned one.
