They don't actually do 120Hz; they can try to refresh the pixels at that rate, but they won't actually be able to change that fast; only TN panels can really produce 120Hz.

That would be wrong. A display can still update at 120hz even if the pixels are too slow to completely keep up with the transitions. The result would be ghosting, more so than on the faster panels, but you'd still have 120 individual discernible refreshes, which means that it really does "produce" 120hz.

It's cool. I don't mean to cut down your monitors, if you like them that's great.

I just don't like the image quality. It is not the same. You can see the dot pitch of the screen and text is not quite clear. It's lit abnormally bright like a light box, bad gradients and there is no true black. It doesn't look solid. Color shifts unless you are sitting directly in front of it, even on Ips but not nearly as bad. 60hz you can visibly see it flicker and ghost.

For sure a lot of people it doesn't bother them and that's cool. But for me it's not tolerable. My friend has one of the old original 22" Sammy BW's? He got one before the panel lottery fiasco and his looks ok, until i watch him play a game, and i see the ghosting and flicker right away.
Feels like my vision is going out or something watching it.

I've had 2 of the best in class for their time lcd monitors made, and while they were ok, they still didn't cut it for me. Both were NEC, one IPS one Tn. I can't remember the models but i'm sure you guys know of them. The IPS was the 20 Widescreen with the TV tuner ect, i sold it for more than i bought it for new after they were discontinued, and the other was an 19" tn non wide - both really were pretty good image quality for what they were. Then NEC started making crap mid range stuff - but looks like they are still making good stuff still in the higher end market. Usually i go straight to NEC whenever i come around to looking at what's out there at the moment. I don't really Need a monitor of course, i'll probably be using these until 2020 since this one is still going strong and i have a brand new refurbed one unused yet in the closet. I figured if LCD didn't come around for a decade or so i'm covered, and looks like it was a good idea that i did.

One day though the time will come when i'll have to make the jump, and i'm just hoping by that time there will be something better that what they are producing now. I pop in and look at the tech every now and then to see what's up.

Only drawback is of course the size and weight of them.
Every once in a while i poke around to see what's new with flat panels. But to me, i've never seen one worth spending a dime on, they always look like crap. Some look ok as long as it's a still image and you are standing far away, but once there's movement - total garbage.
It looks like companies are starting to use IPS panels again - that's at least a plus, my old NEC was alright except for the input lag i just had to get rid of it.
Just curious if things are progressing in the tech or is it still the same rehash crap panels, with input lag, ghosting, and a dark shade of grayish purple for blacks.
Any models with gloss or glass ( no Matte ) 120Hz or higher that stand out amongst the crowd? (Anything below 75Hz hurts my eyes.)
I do game and photoshop ect. Colors have to be really good or no dice. I'm a graphics and image quality whore and pretty non forgiving in that regard. Response time is important, but colors and image quality most of all. I use my pc as a TV basically, so it has to have a good viewing angle as well.
No TN.
If anyone could throw me some suggestions on what to have a look at, or if i sound to hard to please then if i should just wait it out another 5 years or so till they come up with better tech. Thanks.
Forgot to add between 22-24"

Well, it got a little better over the years, though. But you still have to play the game and experience yourself. Why don't you buy a Dell UltraSharp and see if you like it. Returns are free, though.

Most of these problems can be overcome if you're willing to pony up enough cash. $3000 is a good start, though that could potentially run into the tens of thousands depending on how stringent your requirements are.

Refresh on an LCD works differently from a CRT and should not cause you eyestrain, even at much lower rates than you are used to on a quality CRT.

That said, there really aren't any LCDs that can match a good CRT in all areas; sacrifices have to be made, unless you can spend a fortune.

Actually, higher grade panels, like the dell U3011, tend to have more of a latency, since their color depth is significantly greater. That's at least the correlation that I see between color reproduction and ability to game.

FW900's are still king and will remain so for probably a few more years.
