Don't forget the 3DO, here on the Wiki page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3DO_Interactive_Multiplayer

Neo Geo had similar problems.

The only other console that came out around that time that could have competed with Nintendo, Sega and Sony was the Atari Jaguar but bad marketing and a limited game library led to its eventual demise.

Because believe it or not 1080p and 1440p is not gonna be the standard for many years, I've tried arguing your point over and over again but the reality of it is that most people down even own 1080p TVs and that's what the ps3 was aimed at yet the system barely runs games at 1080p anyway. I love my consoles but at at an affordable price point, Hugh end specs are for my PC, consoles are for exclusives

I think 1080p is already the standard for a TV. If you walk into a best buy the MAJORITY of TV's they have there are going to be 1080p TV's. So 1440p+ should be what these so called "next gen" consoles should be aiming for.

I mean heck, smartphones are starting to come out with 1080p+ resolutions as we speak........1080p is a minimum required resolution for these consoles, but it should be higher.

Ok... there is difference in having 1080p monitor, and developers building games natively on 1080p. Of course 1080p TV's and monitors are mainstream. Content is not. Most shows are in 720p or 1080i. Most console games are 720p or lower. And I don't think they will be native 1080p next gen either. Just looking at the rumored specs for next gen puts it in below midrange if todays PC setups. If you try to run Crysis 3 on 1080p on midrange setups you will have to either sacrifice graphics or lower the res, or both. That's the point he was making. Now if PS4 and Xbox 3 come out with some beefy specs, good CPU and plenty ram, I could see most games running 1080p and maintain high quality graphics and decent framerates, but I don't see that happening. I think they will go the WiiU route and offer graphics just enough better than current gen while making the consoles cost effective and profitable. I don't see them making this giant leap, unless it's packed with high end parts and costs tons of money. Economy is stagnant, and they will have to convince those people to spend $300-400 on a new console.

Adoption rate is critical. Developer will make a game with any hardware as long as a lot of people will use that system. The job of Sony/MS is make something thats not too expensive as a present. Most people that can afford consoles don't play consoles.

Agreed.
It is pretty sad how much current gen consoles are holding back the advancement of PC gaming. It's very sad really...

Such a shame too b/c the Neo Geo was awesome. Of course it was the same arcade hardware in a home package so of course it was going to be awesome and expensive.

Edit: On Topic, I have a feeling the Next xbox and the PS4 are going to be underwhelming hardware wise. There are already hints this will be the case for the xbox. Prepare to be disappointed, that is all I am saying.

Also halo 4 is definitely worth the purchase of an Xbox even though paying for an online service is stupid!

no, the opposite: Better PC graphics will lead to better console graphics.
PCs have the edge nowadays as opposed to 2005 regarding technology.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention for the past 5 years, since console games are more profitable - devs develop for consoles first and PCs only as a second consideration usually. There are a few exceptions to this, but since the costs associated with game development have skyrocketed - 95% of games are multi platform which means that most PC games are console ports.

How much power PCs have is meaningless. Most games do not take advantage of it.

the truth is, most genres reached now a point where they can use most available system resources to the fullest. Eg who needs ultra detailed graphics in a strategy game, 2D platformer, RPG or adventure game. any low end PC can run those games. that wasnt the case a decade ago.

There will be just a few games that will be power hungry, usually FPS or 3D action/adventure or open world games, but those will look inherently better on PC anyway as it happens today, with tweaks and mods.

Consoles arent to blame for that really. what is more important now is to focus on AI and more engaging interactivity within the game.
